Introduction to Cloud Computing Overview

This document provides an introduction to cloud computing. It defines cloud computing according to NIST and Forrester as on-demand access to shared configurable computing resources over the internet. The importance of cloud is discussed in terms of cost reduction and participation. Key attributes are broad network access, rapid elasticity, pay-as-you-go pricing, and on-demand services. The main cloud services are SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. Deployment models include private, public, and hybrid clouds. Key characteristics are agility, scalability, and pay-as-you-go pricing. Typical use cases are infrastructure transformation, email, and content delivery. Security and control issues are also discussed.

WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING
DEFINITION-
• According to NIST-
“Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-
demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing
resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services)
that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management
effort or service provider interaction.”Apr 27, 2012
• According to FORRESTER Cloud Computing is-
“A form of standard IT-based –such as Internet –based services, software
or IT infrastructure-offered by a service provider that is accessible via
internet protocols from any computer ,is always available and scales
automatically to adjust to demand, is either pay-per–use or
advertising-based has Web or programmatic-based control

IMPORTANCE OF CLOUD

"We believe we're moving out of the ice age, the iron age, the information age, to the
participation age. You are participating on the Internet, not just viewing stuff. We
build the infrastructure that goes in the data center that facilitates the participation
age.“
Scott McNealy, former CEO Sun Microsystems
Cloud computing has the potential to radically change the nature of information
and communication technology(ICT) provision in the public service and
significantly reduce costs..it is the key element of strategic future of ICT in this
sector…..

ATTRIBUTES-

• Broad Network Access

• Rapid Elasticity
• Pay-As-You Go
• On Demand Service
• Resource Pooling
SERVICES OF CLOUD-

• SaaS-(Software as a Service) e.g.-Email

• PaaS-(Platform as a Service) e.g. -Middleware ,
Database , Build/dev/Test
• IaaS-(Infrastructure as a Service) e.g.-Computer ,
Storage , network , Desktop
SAAS

• Software as a Service (SaaS) is a model for the

distribution of software where customers access software
over the Internet. In SaaS, a service provider hosts the
application at its data center and a customer accesses it
via a standard Web browser.
There are a few major characteristics that apply to most
SaaS vendors:
EXAMPLE OF SAAS
PAAS

• PaaS evolved from Software as a Service (SaaS), which uses

the Internet to host software applications. PaaS is the center of
the five layers of cloud computing. The two layers above PaaS
are the client (hardware and software) and application
(including SaaS) layers. Below the PaaS are the infrastructure -
including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) - and server
(hardware and software) layers.
EXAMPLES OF PAAS
IAAS

• Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a service model that

delivers computer infrastructure on an outsourced basis to
support enterprise operations. Typically, IaaS provides
hardware, storage, servers and data center space or
network components; it may also include software.
EXAMPLES OF IAAS
DEPLOYMENT MODELS
PRIVATE CLOUD

• A private cloud refers to a model of cloud computing

where IT services are provisioned over private IT
infrastructure for the dedicated use of a single
organization. A private cloud is usually managed via
internal resources
PUBLIC CLOUD

• A public cloud refers to a computing service model used for

the provisioning of storage and computational services to the
general public over the Internet.

A public cloud facilitates access to IT resources on a "pay as

you go" billing model. A service provider manages a public
cloud solution's core infrastructure, software and other back-
end architecture in a multi-tenant environment in order to free
up the customer from these responsibilities.
HYBRID CLOUD

• A hybrid cloud is a cloud computing service model that

provides cloud computing solutions by combining different
cloud service models.
• Hybrid cloud service integrates in-house IT infrastructure
with other products and services to meet a business's
specific and unique needs
KEY CHARACTERISTIC

• Agility
• On demand network access
• Scalability
• Device and Location independence
• Pay as You Go
TYPICAL USE CASE OF CLOUD

• Infrastructure Transformation
• Email
• Development and Assurance
• Hosting Application
• Content Delivery
• High Performance Computing
• Backup
CLOUD COMPUTING CONCERNS

• Loss of Control
• Integration: enterprise federated authorization
• Accessibility and UI limitation of web apps
• Reliability, performance , security ; offline access
SECURITY ISSUES

• Insecure Interfaces and APIs Description

• Malicious Insiders
• Shared Technology Issues Description
• Data Loss or Leakage Description
• Account or Service Hijacking Description
• Unknown Risk Profile Description
