The score for Psycho was very unique –
featuring lots of dissonance.
One of the most memorable scenes was that of
a murder. The sound of two violins was made to
sound like the slashing of a blade.
The effectiveness of the Psycho soundtrack are
in the use of semitones. Semitone is the name
for the smallest distance between two notes –
i.e. two notes that are next to each other.
Jaws was a movie
made in 1975 by
Stephen Spielberg
about a Great
White Shark that
terrorises part of
the American
coastline, killing
many swimmers
and surfers.

The score from the film Jaws was one of the most
famous and effective uses of minimalist
Composing and also used the tension found in
semitones. Have a listen to the score now and
see if you can hear how it is being played. It was
composed by famous composer John Williams.
Some good ways of creating tension in a movie
score are using diminished and augmented
chords. These chords are very dissonant and
create a feeling of suspense.
Danny Elfman
Danny Elfman
Has written film scores
Allthe music in a film, including songs and
underscore
Underscore: the music in a film that you don’t
always notice – it builds atmosphere and timbre
Sound effects: Are sometimes part of the music,
to make it sound more dramatic
A Film Score is different to a soundtrack
Soundtrack:
May have songs in that aren’t just written for the
film
They might have been released before by other
artists
Quentin Tarantino uses soundtracks, not film
scores e.g. Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs
Moulin Rouge uses a soundtrack

How is the music similar?
Simpsons and Desperate Housewives
Both have very full textures (lots happening at the
same time)
Both quite fast
Fit in well with what is happening on screen
Both sound very heavenly and dreamlike
Lots of percussion in both (xylophone, glockenspiel,
snare drum, cymbals, triangle, etc.)
How is it different to Men in Black?
