Philippine Traditional Dance

Folkloric dance - is the history of the people in


movement. In some cultures, pale fragments of
it survive centuries of invasions and diasporas.

Philippine Traditional Dance - is an integral part


of Filipino culture that dates to the period
before Ferdinand Magellan stepped foot in the
Philippines. The traditional dances of the
Filipinos are vibrant and colorful, capturing the
history of the archipelago.
Origin Of Phil. Traditional Dance

Philippine traditional dances were


practiced even before colonization. It
serves as an expression of everything done
by our ancient Filipinos. It may rooted with
happiness, grief, and so on and so forth. As
Philippine was being colonized with variety
of countries, we began to adapt and
practiced the dances they brought to us
that wrote our history and a mark of being
a Filipino citizen.
History Of The Philippine Traditional
Dance
The history of Philippine folk dancing
incorporates influences from immigrants and
conquerors while at the same time maintaining
distinctly Filipino roots. Philippine folk dancing is a
true reflection of daily life in past centuries.

 PRE-COLONIAL
They danced to appease the gods, to curry
favor from powerful spirits, to celebrate a hunt or
harvest, to mimic the exotic life forms around
them. They danced their stories and their
shamanic rituals, their rites of passage and their
remembered legends and history
• MUSLIM MERCHANTS
Muslim traders from the Malay
Archipelago reached the Philippines in the
14th century, well ahead of the Europeans.
They created their own folk dances in the
areas where they settled. Singkil is one of
the most famous.

• SPANISH COLONIZATION
Dancers adapted imposed Christian
belief and culture to their own dances,
borrowing court choreography but imbuing
it with Philippine spirit.
The Maria Clara dances merged Spanish
court style (and its stylized courtship
conventions) with Philippine exuberance.
Maria Clara is the pure and noble heroine of a
novel who represents the finest qualities of
Filipino womanhood.

• FOLKLORIC FUSION
The revered folk dances from the
lowlands and the hill tribes persist in their
traditional form and in contemporary
choreography for Philippine ballet companies.
Types Of Philippine Traditional Dance

LUZON

 Aburaray - is a contraction of the words "Aba" and


"Ruray". "Aba!" is an exclamation which is equivalent
to "Hey!". "Ruray" is a nickname for Aurora. This is a
wine offering that signals the beginning of folk
dancing and singing that originates from Tayabas.

 Maglalatik - This a mock war dance between the


Muslims and the Christians that originated from
Binan, Laguna, Philippines. The dance is about a
fight for the latik or coconut meat during the
Spanish era.
• Cariñosa - it is the “National Dance of the
Philippines”, a flirtatious Philippine group dance in
the Maria Clara suite of Pihilippine folk dances
where the fan or handkerchief plays an
instrumental roll as it places the couple in a hard-
to-get romance scenario.

• Kalapati - The dance Kalapati originated from from


Cabugao, Ilocos Sur province. It symbolizes peace
and is represented by imitating the movements of a
graceful dove.

• La jota manileña - This is a dance named after


Manila, this dance is an adaptation of the Castilian
Jota where dancers where where dancers use
bamboo castanets and clack them to provide
music.
VISAYAS

• Kuratsa - This is a dance that originated from Bohol,


Visayas but it is also popular at Ilokano festivals.This
dance commands a sense of improvisation which
mimics a young playful couple’s attempt to get each
other’s attention.

• Tinikling - The dance originated in Leyte as an


imitation of the legendarily fast and graceful
movements of the tikling birds as they dodged
bamboo traps set by rice farmers.

• Mazurka Boholana - is a Spanish-inspired ballroom


dance from the Bohol province of the Philippines.
Although the mazurka is the Polish national dance, it
was wildly popular throughout Europe in the 19th
Pandanggo sa ilaw - originated from
Lubang Island, MindoroThe term
pandanggo comes from the Spanish word
“fandango”, this involves the presence of
three tinggoy, or oil lamps, balanced on
the head and the back of each hand.

Escotis - it is popularly known in Capiz and


is performed in any social gathering of the
people inhabiting the mountains of Capiz
in the barrios of Tinpas and Panitan and
also in the town of Panay.
MINDANAO
• Itik-itik - The dance originated from Surigao del Norte,
Philippines. A young woman named Kanang (short for
Cayetana) was the best dancer in that province. At
one baptismal celebration, she introduced new steps
which were improvisations of the dance Sibay. She
imitated the movements of the ducks or itik. Because of
its unusual steps and fascinating interpretation, the
audience began imitating her.

• Sagayan - Philippine war dance performed by both


the Maguindanao and Maranao depicting in
dramatic fashion the steps their hero, Prince Bantugan,
took upon wearing his armaments, the war he fought
in and his subsequent victory afterwards.
• Singkil (or Sayao sa Kasingkil) - is a famous
Philippine dance of the Maguindanao people, but
was popularized by the nearby Maranao peoples
of Lake Lanao and later the Bayanihan Philippine
National Folk Dance Company.

• Karasaguyon - The dance is classified under Tribal


dance. it originated from Lake Sebu, South
Cotabato. “Karasaguyon” of the T’boli portrays a
polygamous male in the process of picking his next
wife from among four sisters vying for his attention.

• Kandingan - performed at Tausog weddings in


Jolo, the Kandingan consists of figures and steps
based on classical and traditional Indian dance
forms.
