    TAU-BUID MANGYANS

    The Tau-buid or  Taw’buid is the largest of the


    eight Mangyan tribes of Mindoro. Once occupying
    Mindoro’s lowlands, they were pushed deep into
    the mountains by both Spanish colonizers and
    Filipino immigrants.

    smokers and even children begin
    smoking at a young age.

    The Tau-buid Mangyans lives in the


    municipalities of Socorro,
    Pinamalayan and Gloria, but
    mostly in Occidental Mindoro.

    TAU-BUID LANGUAGE

    The Taubuid language is a language spoken by Tau-


    build Mangyans in the province of Mindoro in the Philippines. The
    Tau-build (or Tawbuid) Mangyans live in central Mindoro.

    In Oriental Mindoro, Eastern Tawbuid (also known as Bangon)


    is spoken by 1,130 people in the municipalities of Socorro, 
    Pinamalayan, and Gloria.

    In Occidental Mindoro, Western Tawbuid (also known


    as Batangan) is spoken by 6,810 people in the municipalities of 
    Sablayan and Calintaan.

    TAU-BUID MANGYANS

    In some areas close to the lowlands,


    women wrap a knee-length cloth
    around their bark bra-string and men
    wear cloth instead of bark. Bark cloth
    is worn by both men and women in the
    interior and is also used for head
    bands, women's breast covers, and
    blankets. Cloth is made by extracting,
    pounding and drying the inner bark of
    several trees [Pennoyer, 1979].

    The tribe’s men and women wear loincloth that is made by extracting,
    pounding and drying the inner bark of several trees. Some of the women
    who live in the lower part of the mountains wrap a knee-length cloth
    around their bark bra-string, while the men wear cloth instead of bark.
    However, bark cloth is still worn by both men and women in the interior. It
    is also used as breast covers, headbands and blankets.

    Many still sport loincloths called amakan, hunt game
    with spears called tulag, bows called gadun and spike
    traps called silo. Unlike other Mangyans who chew
    betel-nut, nearly all Taw’buid men smoke tobacco—
    children included.
