Definition of Sumatera Island

Indonesia has a group of islands famous for its beauty in the


world. One of the large islands of the island group is Sumatra.
To find out clearly the shape of this one island you can see
directly the map of Sumatra. Sumatra Island holds a myriad of
wealth both from the natural sector, population and culture. If
seen from the map image of the island of Sumatra, you will
see this island stretching from north to south of Indonesia. The
island that is passed by the equator has very much diversity.
This diversity can be seen from its natural resources to its
biological resources. For those of you who want to know more
about the island of Sumatra, below will be presented various
information about the island of Sumatra.
Location of Sumatera Island
 Astronomical location
Sumatra Island is located at position 6ᵒLU to 6ᵒLS and is also located between 95ᵒBB to 109ᵒBT. With this astronomical position, Sumatra
Island is in the tropics. Not only that, even the island of Sumatra is also crossed by a line 0ᵒ (equator).
 Geographical location
Geographically, the island of Sumatra is located in the western part of the Indonesian archipelago. In the north, Sumatra Island borders the Bay of
Bengal, while in the East it is bordered by the Malacca Strait. In the western part of Sumatra island borders the Indian Ocean. The southern part of
Sumatra Island is directly adjacent to the Sunda Strait. Judging from its location, Sumatra Island is a fairly extensive island. The area of ​the island
reaches 473,481 square kilometers. With an adequate area of ​at least 57,940,361 residents who packed the island of Sumatra (2018 census survey).
The island of Sumatra is divided into 10 provinces.
Province Existing on Sumatra Island
The size of the island of Sumatra made the Indonesian government divide the island into 10 provinces. Each province has its own regional
government. Every province in Sumatra has its own uniqueness. You can see these 10 provinces on the Sumatra map. Here are the 10 provinces:
Aceh Province

1. Province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam This province


is a province located on the northern tip of the island of
Sumatra. Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam has a capital city
called Banda Aceh. Banda Aceh has the nickname as the
city porch of Mecca. This is because the majority of Aceh
residents are Muslims and the spread of Islam starts in
Aceh. Aceh has many small islands, including Pulau
Weh.

2. North Sumatra Province North Sumatra is a


province located in the northern part of the island
of Sumatra right in the southern part of Aceh. The
capital of North Sumatra is the city of Medan.
North Sumatra has native Malay people and also
Batak tribes. The landscape in North Sumatra is
very beautiful. Even North Sumatra has a world-
famous lake, Lake Toba.
West Sumatra

3. West Sumatra Province West Sumatra Province has a


capital city called Padang. West Sumatra is inhabited by
indigenous Minang tribes. Minang people are known as
people who are good at trading and cooking. Even
Padang has special food that has been recognized by the
world for its delicacy. Typical food is called rendang. The
province also has an amazing stretch of nature.
Riau Province

4. Riau Province on the island of Sumatra that has a rich


history. This province is inhabited by indigenous Malays.
The city of Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau
provincerovince Riau is a. The Riau region is an area that
has many rivers. Riau is also famous for its rich natural
resources.
Riau Islands

5. Riau Islands Province Although the location is not


integrated on the island of Sumatra, the Riau islands
also enter the island of Sumatra. This is because the
Riau islands are right next to Riau province. However,
because of its vast area, the islands were made by the
Indonesian province themselves. The most famous
island of the Province is the island of Batam.
Jambi

6. Jambi Province Jambi is a province located in the


middle of the island of Sumatra. Jambi Province is also
inhabited by a majority of Malay tribes. The capital of
Jambi province is the city of Jambi. Jambi Province has an
amazing landscape. Even on this island there are also
famous mountains, one of which is Mount Kerinci.
Bengkulu

7. Bengkulu Province This province has the name of


the capital which is also the same as the name of the
province, Bengkulu. In Bengkulu you can also find a
very beautiful landscape. Bengkulu is rich in lush green
forests. There are many wild animals that also live in
the Bengkulu forest area. The native population of
Bengkulu is also a Malay tribe.
South Sumatra

8. South Sumatra Province


This province is located in the southern region of the
island of Sumatra, so it's natural if the name is South
Sumatra Province. Palembang is the name of the
provincial capital of North Sumatra. South Sumatra also
has indigenous Malay tribes. The natural stretch of South
Sumatra is also very stunning. The province also has many
rivers. One of the famous rivers in South Sumatra is the
Musi River.
Bangka Belitung

9. Bangka Belitung Province If you look at the map of


Sumatra, you will see if this one province is a little
separate from the island of Sumatra. Even though it is
separate, Bangka Belitung province is also part of the
island of Sumatra. The capital of Bangka Belitung is
Pangkal Pinang. The coastal Malay tribe is a native
tribe of the Bangka Belitung community. The province
is divided into two, namely Bangka Island and
Belitung Island.
Lampung

 10. Lampung Province


 The last province on the island of Sumatra is the province of Lampung.
The capital of Lampung province is the city of Bandar Lampung. Lampung
Province is famous for its biodiversity. There are many clay animals that
live in Lampung's provincial forests. This province is also located in the
southern part of the island of Sumatra. Lampung province has fertile
natural conditions. Malays are also a native of Lampung residents.
 When you look at the map of Sumatra, you will see all the provinces on
this island. As a large island and has a lot of potential, Indonesia is
fortunate to have this one big island. Sumatra Island is also an island that
has a lot of fascinating diversity.
 Overall the island of Sumatra is an island that is green with mountains,
hills, valleys and also flowing rivers. The Malay race became the majority
of the native inhabitants of Sumatra. The location of this island is also
fairly strategic. Even many foreign countries praise Sumatra for its
location and beauty.
 Sumatra Island also does not stand alone. There are many small islands
surrounding Sumatra. Some of the small islands are Nias Island, Batam
Island and Weh Island. You can see all the features of this island on the
