LWD Depth Measurement
LWD Depth is driller’s Depth ! The sum of
lengths of all pipe joins and BHA
components (measured at surface
conditions)
It is not corrected for effects of
 Pipe stretch due to drill string weight
(+)
 Thermal Expansion. (+)

LWD engineer has to adjust LWD depth at

each pipe joint to match with the driller’s
pipe tally if there is a discrepancy between
LWD depth and Driller’s pipe tally
As a result LWD logs are always too
shallow!

Wireline Depth Measurement
 Wireline depth measurement is made
under tension
 No stretch correction is needed for
downlog in a near-vertical well. Uplog
is tied in to downlog
 In a deviated well the tension on the
cable will decrease and cable will
shrink
 Temperature will cause the cable to
shrink
 As a result Wireline logs are always
deeper than LWD and more accurate
in low-deviation wells. In deviated well
WL logs are always too deep

Summary of Depth Measurements
LWD depth is driller’s depth
 Based on drillpipe tally made at surface conditions
 Does not account for pipe stretch due to weight and temperature

Wireline depth is a direct measurement of cable length

 Made under tension when the cable is already stretched
 Provides accurate depth in vertical wells
 Becomes less accurate with increased temperature and/or deviation

Depth correction is required for both LWD and WL logs

 Especially in deep and/or deviated wells

What is SmartDepth?
SmartDepth is a FEM code to correct LWD depth for
 Drillpipe stretch due to drillstring weight
 Drillpipe elongation due to temperature
 Variations in WOB
 Heave/Tide
SmartDepth corrects Wireline logs for
 Effects of tension redistribution in the deviated hole
 Temperature
SmartDepth correction can be applied to
 LWD & Wireline logs
 MWD Surveys
 MDT/Stethoscope pressure stations

Conclusions & Recommendations
Depth errors may result in significant underestimation of reserves

LWD and WL environmental depth corrections are necessary in deep wells

Maintain separate references for LWD and WL depths

 Never tie-in one to the other
 Attention to driller’s pipe tally accuracy
 Keep a record of all depth corrections

Develop depth management practices and strategy

 Determine “absolute depth” from corrected LWD and WL
 Utilize “absolute depth” in all subsurface models
