Thesis Aim
 To analyze the pattern function of uniform linear array,
uniform planar array and uniform circular array
 Design and Comparing their performance by using Matlab
and HFSS
 Compare the performance of the Adaptive algorithms
LMS,LCMV,MVDR by matlab simulations
 Applying two algorithm for online correction when one or
more elements are faulty. One base on signal reconstruction
and the other base on genetic algorithm.

Background 2/2
• With the development of computer and communication
technology, Many portable communication devices
appeared in people's life,
• Statistics has proven that in modern society we cannot
live without our portable devices
• There is a common intercom between our various
wearable devices, such as smart watches, smart helmet,
Google glass, smart phones etc..

• Conformal antenna is widely used in wearable devices.

• When one or more elements are destroied, you should
find a suitable way to overcome the problem.
Conformal Antenna

Characteristics of Conformal Antennas

 Wide angle beam coverage
 Saving limited space of communication
equipment
 Radar cross section is small
 Increasing the available aperture
Today’s Antenna
Beam forming

This method creates the radiation pattern of the antenna

array by adding the phases of the signals in the desired
direction
and by nullifying the pattern in the unwanted direction
Beamforming
• The outputs of the individual sensors are linearly combined
after being scaled with the corresponding weights
• optimizing the antenna array to have maximum gain in the
direction of desired signal and nulls in the direction of
interferers.

• For beamformer the output at any time n , y(n) is given by a

linear combination of the data at M antennas,
• with x(n) being the input vector and w(n) being the weight
vector
Online correction

In the ideal case, the array elements of the conformal
array antenna work normally, but in reality, due to
environmental factors or human factors, the array
element damage will inevitably occur. When the element
is damaged, the output signal of the element is 0 or
Large DC, these signals do not contain any information,
so the subsequent beamforming will be set to 0, the
element is the failure element
Online correction Algorithms
1.Online correction algorithm of pattern based on signal
reconstruction

𝐹𝑛 𝑡 = 𝑠𝑖 𝑡 𝑒 𝑗 𝑛−1 ∆𝑖
= 𝑠𝑖 𝑡 𝑒 𝑗 𝑚−1 ∆𝑖 𝑗 𝑛−𝑚 ∆𝑖
𝑒

2. Online correction based on genetic Algorithm

Fit𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = 𝜇1 σ 𝐴𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 − 𝐵𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 + 𝜇2 σ 𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 − 𝐵𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒
Problem Statement

• Conformal antennas can solve most of the

problems of portable devices but undesirable
external factors can cause damage to the array
elements which will make the antenna loses
efficiency
How To Solve The Problem
• we implemented LMS,MVDR and LCMV algorithms as
solution for beam forming

• By the simulation, we know that algorithms above are viable,

they can make the main lobe of the pattern aimed at the
direction of desired signal meanwhile making the null aimed at
the direction of undesired signal

• Secondly we will implement two algorithm for online

correction

– One will base on signal reconstruction and

– The other will base on genetic algorithm
