Mission

Highlights

In 2005 : Top 25 best performing maternity hospital in India by RHA.


• Proper recording of data related to expectant mothers.
• Appropriate involvement of obstetricians and midwives in parental care.
• Basic advice of infant feeding.
In 2010 : 25 bottom performing

*CMO Rita Maharaja was under pressure to improve rating of hospital as the future funding
depended on living up to the expectation of stakeholders.

MMH Staff Efforts and Commitments ( 1995 to 2005).


• Doctors and nurses work hard with expectant mothers for high quality maternity services.

• Paid attention to expectant mothers with little or no formal education, in which case , doctor

and nurses had an extra responsibility to educate and create awareness about parental care

such as proper nutritional care, regular health checkup, blood work and immunization.

• Success of MMH’s mission depended on delivery of healthy babies with normal weight.

Dr. Julia Albert CMO in 1995 to 2005 achieved the mission.

Rated among top 25 best perfoming maternity hospitals in north India.

MMH received an average score of 4.6 on a 5 point scale of 25 performance indicator (3 out of 5)

• Data related to expectant mother

• The appropriate involvement of obstetricians and midwives in antenatal care.

• Providing mothers with basic advice on infant feeding.

*Retired in 2005 with this accomplishment.

From 2006-2010
• January 2006 – MMH Board of trustees appointed Dr. Rita Mahraj as CMO after retirement of Dr. Julia.

• December 2010- RHA rated MMH as bottom 25 % for its maternity services.
RHA Report

• 10% of expectant mothers , who were surveyed immediately after giving birth to a baby stated
that ,although MMH provided parental ‘s weight education to 40% of the expectant mothers
who needed it Majority didn’t adhere to basic advice effect of mother's age on baby
• Importance and benefits of breast feeding, Importance of child nutrition throughout
pregnancy. Only 50% of the women at MMH were able to fully understand the prenatal
sessions compared to the national average 60%.
MMH penalized for failing to provide statistic regarding breastfeeding ,mothers education
qualification, birth order of baby and smoking behavior during pregnancy.
38% said that they were satisfied with the service provide by the hospital.

Concerns of Board

• After RHA report Petra Rao chairman of the MMH Board of trustees expressed
disappointment to ,Dr Maharaj. He asked to review maternity service.

• Explained how they have invested significantly and committed extra funding for
the future dedicated to improve maternity services.

• Asked to submit recommendation to the board by the end of December 2012 as to


improve the rating conducted by RHA.

Funding and expectation for St. Mary Maternity Hospital.


• MMH received $300000 in 2011 from local philanthropist.
• Strength the hospital as a referral health care facility the lives of expectant mother and
babies.
• Future funding will be difficult with low rating.

Way Forward

• Rita decided to conduct survey for expectant mothers to understand all the issues
and there implications for doctors, nurse AHPs and administrators.

• Discussed with her deputy Dr. Rubie kite to overcome from this crisis.

• To prepare actionable recommendations for the board.

• Dr. Kite surveyed birth recovery ward at hospital and collected responses from 33
mothers.
