 Why parts of speech?


To create strong writing skills.
To be able to use them correctly
To be able to understand the relation
of each parts of speech
To be able to clarify ideas
To understand its role in a sentence

NOUN – Names a person, place , thing, idea, or way of thinking


PROPER NOUN - British Malaysian Institute, National Museum, Ali
COMMON NOUN - table, boy, bicycle, car
COUNTABLE NOUN - tables, boys, bicycles, cars
UNCOUNTABLE NOUN - water, rice, sugar, oil
COLLECTIVE NOUNS - refer to groups of people or things
: a group of students
a pride of lions
a school of fish
a constellations of stars

 PRONOUN – Stand in place of the Noun, and acts like a Noun.


Personal Pronoun – I , You, She, He, We, They, It
Reflexive Pronoun – Myself, herself, himself, itself
ourselves , themselves

Possessive Pronoun - Mine, yours, hers, his, ours, theirs.

REMINDER NOTE! COUNTABLE NOUNS

 Nouns ending with ch, sh, s, ss or x add es


 Eg : Scratch – scratches
 Slash - slashes
 possess - possesses
 box - boxes

 Noun ending with o add s or es


 Eg : piano – pianos

Adverb

 Descriptive words that add to the meaning of a verb, an adjective,


another adverb or preposition.
 Eg : The tiger moves silently.
 Silently describes the verb move.

Adjectives – words that describe nouns. They describe
the shape, colour, size, mood, quality and quantity of

 Small words which show time, direction, and other functions.


Eg: at , in , by, for, on, up, beyond, beneath, behind, above, up, down, to,
from, into, out off, along, through, around, among, round, off, across,
over, with, against, away, towards.

She is sailing with the wind and he is rowing against the wind.
There is a dog among the sheep.
He is walking across / over the bridge.

Conjunctions 12

 The work of a conjunction is to join words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.


 For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so – Coordinating Conjunction
 Because, while, although, since, then, before, after, though,

 Article – a, an
 Articles are used before noun
 Eg : an umbrella, a box, a university, an honest man
 Article – the
 Refer to specific things or perple
 The Great Wall of China
 The best
 The President

Interjections

 Are words used to express sudden emotions such as anger, surprise, pain
and happiness.

 Eg : Ouch! My foot ! Its so painful


 Wow! An interesting story

 We can also use “how” and “what” as interjections in sentences.


 Eg : What a pleasant surprise!
 How interesting!
