Activity 1 “ What Is Your Position?
1. Identify the alphabet given its position in the
English alphabets.
2. Determine the position of the given letter from

the list of English alphabets.

Activity 4: “Form Your Line”
Situation:
Eileen is the 4th tallest student in a line of 10 students.
If she is the 4th tallest student, then 6 students are
shorter than her.
It also means that 60% of the students are shorter than

Eileen.
If you are the 8th tallest student in a line of 10 students,

how many percent of the students are shorter than
you?
 Activity 5: “Where Do I Belong?”
Situations:
1. A group of students obtained the
following scores in their statistics
quiz: 8, 2, 5, 4. 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9.
Locate Q1, Q2, and Q3.
2. Find Q1, Q2, and Q3 of the scores of 10
students in mathematics seatwork:
7, 4, 8, 9,3, 6, 7, 4, 5, 8
 Observe how Q1, Q2, and Q3 are obtained from the
data set.

Q2= 5 median/ middle value
Q3= 8 upper quartile
 The Quartiles for Ungrouped Data
 The quartiles are 3 score points which divide the
distribution of scores into four equal parts. Hence,
twenty –five percent of the distribution are below Q1,
fifty-percent are below Q2, and seventy-five percent
are below Q3 where Q1 is the lower quartile, Q2 is the
median or the middle value and Q3 is the upper
quartile.
25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1.

Some problems involving quartiles for ungrouped data
1. Aling Goding, the owner of “ Bacarreñas Restaurant” had
recorded the number of customers who patronized their
menu each day for 11 days and the results are as follows:
24, 30, 19, 39, 29, 15, 18, 30, 12, 24, 31. Find the lower
quartile and the upper quartile.
Ans. 12, 15, 18, 19, 24, 24, 29, 30, 30, 31, 39
2. The lower quartile of a data set is 8th data value( 8th
element in the list). How many data values are there
in the data set?

1, 2,, . . ., 7, 8, 9, 10, . . .,16, 17, . . . 23, 24, . . ., 30, 31
7 + 7 + 1 - number of values in the lower half

7 + 7 + 1 – number of values in the upper half
1 – value – median

Another solution:
¼(n+1)=8
( n + 1 ) = 32
n = 31
Positions of Quartiles for Ungrouped Data
Position of Q1 = ¼( n + 1 )
Position of Q2 = ½ ( n + 1 )
Position of Q3 = 3/4 ( n + 1)
Deciles fpr Ungrouped Data
The deciles are nine score – points

which divide a distribution of
scores into 10 equal parts. They
are denoted by D1, D2, D3, . . . , D10
Deciles are computed in the same way as

quartiles are computed
Percentiles of Ungrouped Data
The percentiles are 99 score points which
divide a distribution of score into 100
equal parts. They are denoted by P1, P2,
P3, . . . P98, P99. It is used to
characterized values according to the
percentage below them.

Dennies and Christine scored 32 and 23
respectively in the National Career Assessment
Examination(NCAE). The determining factor
for a college scholarship is that a student’s
score should be in the top 10% of the scores of
his/her graduating class. The students in the
graduating class obtained the following scores

NCAE.(posted in a manila paper)
