CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns. It is a
change attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon
dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. It can also be referred to as
change in a significant time variation in weather patterns occurring over
periods ranging from decades to millions of years (Ruddiman, 2013).
Characteristics of climate change include; excessive rainfall which often wash
out farm lands, causes floods, breed insects and mosquitoes which affects
both human beings and other animals on earth. It also include excessive
winds, drought inadequate rainfalls, increase in temperatures among others
Background continues …….
Climate change is caused by two basic factors, which include natural
processes (bio-geographical) and human activities (anthropogenic). The
natural processes are the astronomical and the extra-terrestrial factors.
Natural process include volcanic activities and solar radiation among others. On the other
hand human activities that influence climate change include; urbanisaiton,
industrialisation, burning of fossil fuel, deforestation, pollution of water etc
Climate change affects Agriculture which is the main sources of food
production especially in Africa. Climate change affects food security. Food
security refers to the situation where people at all time have access to
physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food to meet
their dietary needs and food preferences for active and healthy life (Food
and Agricultural Organization 2007). The indices of food security include;
availability, affordability, stability and Utilisation

Climate change affects Agriculture which is the main sources of food

production especially in Africa. Climate change affects food security.
Food security refers to the situation where people at all time have
access to physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious
food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for active and
healthy life (Food and Agricultural Organization 2007). The indices of
food security include; availability, affordability, stability and Utilization
In most areas in Nigeria, climate change has affected these indices of
food security. Due to climate change, many crops have suffered
diseases and extinction due to climate change. This have had
devastating effects on food security. It is bass on this that the study
sought to examine the PERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE
ON FOOD SECURITY AMONG RESIDENTS OF AFIKPO EDUCATIONAL
ZONE OF EBONYI STATE
Statement of the Problem

There have been problems of food shortage and high cost of food
commodities in the market due to low yield of crops occasioned by
climate change. This has resulted to increase of malnutrition, hunger
and starvation as well as poverty. Based on this, the researcher sought
to examine the PERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON FOOD
SECURITY AMONG RESIDENTS OF AFIKPO EDUCATIONAL ZONE OF
EBONYI STATE
The study will be guided by four specific purposes, research questions
and hypotheses all of which were in line with the each other

The study will be beneficial to families in afikpo educational zone

government ministries of agriculture international bodies and my fellow
researchers it will be of benefit to families because parent will know the
causes of poor agricultural production high cost of food items in the
market and strategies way of mitigating against climate change effect.
Secondly it will be of benefit to ministries of agriculture, it will enable
them strategies means of reducing the effect of climate change on food
production, it will also enable them carry out more research that will
lead to improving food production in Nigeria.
The study is limited to parent resident in afikpo education zone
The following research questions will guide the study.
Chapter 2

Literature is properly reviewed under conceptual, theoretical and

empirical studies.
Chapter 3
• This chapter focused on the methods in carrying out the research
• Descriptive survey research design will be use in this study
• The study will be conducted in Afikpo educational zone of Ebonyi state. The zone is made
up of five Local Government Area that made up Afikpo south, Afikpo North, Ivo, Onicha
and Ohaozara respectively
• The population comprises of a total of 178105 from Ebonyi south Senatorial
zone.(National population commission senses 2016).
• The sample size will be 400 because the total population is very bulky, the researcher will
use Taro Yamane formula to select the sample size
• A structured questionnaire designed based on four rating scale of strongly Agreed (SA)
Agreed(A), Disagreed (D) and strongly (SD) with a normal value of 4, 3, 2, and 1
respectively
• The questionnaire will be submitted to three experts in Home economics and 2 in the
measurement and Evaluation unit of Science education education
• The internal consistency of this instrument will be ascertained with
the use Cronbach Alpha methods. The data that will be collected from
thirty respondents from Ebonyi South Local Government (which is a
non-target area) will be used to compute of the reliability coefficient.
The technique will determine the reliability of the instrument. Test
retest method will also be used to ascertain the reliability of
instrument. The result of the reliability yielded a coefficient of 0.95
which shows that the instrument is highly reliable
• The data generated will be subjected to both descriptive and
inferential data analysis. Descriptive statistics involves the use of
mean (തx) and standard deviation to the research questions. While the
hypotheses will be tested at the 0.05 alpha level using t-test statistics.
