WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT CATASTROPHE?

 Catastrophic event regarding the environment due to human

activity or naturally caused.

 Impair air quality, pollute the water, take human lives,

destroy pristine landscapes or harm wildlife.

 Example: Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, Bhopal, India

Gas Leak, & The Great Smog of London.
CHEMICAL POLLUTION

 Happened on 7 March 2019

 Location: Sungai Kim Kim, Pasir
Gudang, Johor
 Involve 1.5km of Sungai Kim Kim
 On 20 March, Sungai Kim Kim is
declared free from chemical pollution.
CHEMICAL POLLUTION

 Defined as the presence or increase in our

environment of chemical pollutants that are not
naturally present there or are found in amounts
higher than their natural background values. Most
of the chemicals that pollute the environment are
man-made, resulted from the various activities in
which toxic chemicals are used for various
purposes.
WHAT HAPPENED?

 The chemical industry

Usually linked to polluted waste streams. Many
rivers and surface water bodies were contaminated by
the numerous waste streams coming from various
chemical plants, as well as other industrial sources.
Even though measures were taken to reduce this type
of pollution, its effects are still visible.
FACTORS

 Chemicals, believed to contain heavy metal used to dissolve

metal were discharged into the Sungai Kim Kim

 A lorry tanker is believed to have dumped chemical waste into

Sungai Kim Kim in early morning before the victims fallen ill

 The Fire and Rescue Department has identified at least 15

types of chemicals in air samples taken from areas
surrounding Sungai Kim Kim
EFFECTS

 In March, 111 schools in Pasir Gudang district were shut for

two weeks.

 5848 people seek medical treatment after inhaling toxic

fumes from the river.

 The symptoms included breathing difficulties and vomiting.

 There were others who complained of headaches, and a few

others suffered sore eyes, dizziness, and chest pain.
EFFECT

 Led to a decline in catch and fishermen’s sales to drop

because people were afraid to buy their catch.

 River water had turned turbid causing fish to die and there
was a stench.

 People suffer persistent muscle strain in their hands and

legs, and high toxic levels in the blood.
SOLUTION/PREPARATION STEPS
 The federal government has approved an allocation of RM8
million for river purification works.

 The state government of Johor has approved an emergency

allocation of RM 6.4 million to improve the cleaning process.

 Malaysia's Health Ministry formed a medical team to examine

a total of 6,000 victims affected by the pollution.

 The cleaning operation of the 1.5 kilometre stretch of the

affected river with a total of 900 tonnes of soil and 1,500
tonnes of polluted water were cleaned.

 Two company owners and a worker have been arrested on

suspicion of being responsible for chemical waste disposal.
CONCLUSION

 The chemical pollution in Sungai Kim Kim recently provided a

clear reflection of the level of public awareness at various
levels still at a very low and alarming level.

 Although this incident has been a shock to all Malaysians, it

has at least been a wake-up call to all involved.

 The relevant environmental bodies need to strengthen the

enforcement aspects under their respective jurisdictions to
prevent this incident from happening again.

 The environmental department, e.g., needs to be prepared

with sufficient manpower to ensure more regular monitoring
is possible. This is not to prevent repeated tragedies, but to
ensure that other environmental crimes can be prevented.
