DEVELOPING THE BIODEGRADABILITY OF PLASTIC BY THE USE OF CORN STARCH

Introduction
Plastic is a widely used material all over the world. It has a
plasticizer that acts as a substance that is added in order to make them
ductile so they can be molded in any form. Some examples of plastics
are: polyethylene terephthalate (soda bottle), polypropylene (straws)
and low density polyethylene (shopping bags).
The non-biodegradability of these petroleum-based plastics
became a major environmental issue due to the pollution carried by it.
But we can lessen this never-ending problem by using Corn Starch as
an alternative component to make plastics. Corn is a plant that grows
on tall, grass-like stalks. Starch is a natural bio polymer consisting
predominantly of two polymer types of glucose namely amylose and
amylopectin. The advantages of using cornstarch is its ability to
decomposed shortly and its renewability.
Materials

1.5g cornstarch 10ml distilled 0.5-1.5g glycerol 1ml of white Stove

water vinegar

1-2 drops food Spatula Saucepan Foil Apron ad Gloves

coloring
Corn Starch
• A colorless powder used as
thickener in kitchen.
distilled water
• A water that has been boiled
and condensed back in water in
the separate container.
white vinegar
• Plays an important role in the
production of bioplastic.
• First, it acts as a solvent to
dissolve the starch.
• Secondly, it helps the starch
molecules to stay disrupted after
heated.
• Replace DEPH
• Makes the plastic less brittle
glycerol
• Glycerol is a colorless, odorless
liquid with a sweet taste.
• The glycerin acts as a plasticizer
making the bioplastic flexible.
• Can be use instead of LEAD
food coloring
• Edible material used to give
color to the plastic
• Can be use instead of Cadmium
spatula
• Use to stir the mixture
sauce pan
• Use to cook the mixture
foil
• Use to hold the mixture after

stove
• Use for heating the mixture
Apron and gloves
• Use for Aseptic Technique
Product (corn starch plastic)
The Biodegradabilty of this corn
starch based plastic was proven. It
may look like a regular plastic
because of the texture, but it is
100% biodegradable and eco
friendly. Corn starch as a subtitute
for petroleum is preferable mainly
because they are renewable
material.
statement of the problem
1. Is cornstarch an effective component of biodegradable plastic?

2. Can the use of cornstarch in making plastic reduce pollution?

3. Is the use of cornstarch in making plastic more beneficial for

consumers?

4. How is cornstarch contributing to the biodegradability of plastics?

scope and delimitation
The researcher is conducting a study on the use of corn starch in
making biodegradable plastic. This study aims to show the benefits of
this kind of biodegradable plastic to humans as well as the
environment. This research will last for several days and will take place
in the kitchen.
process
1. Gather the ingredients. To
make this kind of Bioplastic, you
will need a 10ml distilled water,
0.5-1.5 glycerol, 1.5g cornstarch
1ml of white vinegar and 1-2
drops of food coloring (optional).
process
2. Put the ingredients on the
sauce pan and stir it with spatula.
Stir it until it becomes totally
dissolved.
process
3. Place the saucepan on the
stove and set it to medium low
around 10-15 minutes. Remove
the mixture after it becomes clear
and thick.
process
4. Pour the mixture onto foil and
let it cool. While the mixture is
warm, take the opportunity to
mold it, if you see bubbled part,
poke them with a toothpick.
process
5. Allow the plastic to dry for at
least two days. Put the plastic on
low temperature area and wait for
2 days until it fully hardened.
