SILKWORM
and COCOON
RESEARCH About the topic:
Silkworms are caterpillars that spin a silk cocoon and change
into silkworm moth, while inside their cocoon emerging to
mate and lay eggs . After hatching from an egg the worm takes
about one month to grow large enough to spin the silk. The
cocoon is made of one thread of raw silk from 300 to 900
meters long

Sustainability :
Silk is a natural protein fiber , some forms of which can be
woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed
mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to
form cocoons

Zero wastage:
Commercial silk fiber produced by mulberry silkworm is
generally white. The modern textile industry demands that silk
fiber be dyed into a variety of colors that can be weaved into
attractive textiles. But dyeing is one of the most polluting
industries. Dyeing silk directly by feeding silkworms would
eliminate those water-washing steps. The technique involves
feeding the larvae their favorite food — mulberry leaves —
dipped in dye. The dye is transported along the biochemical
pathways of the silkworm to produce a colored cocoon and
colored silk fiber.

MAKING IT PERSONAL

The product that I have made is not only

inspired by the texture of the caterpillar it
is also inspired by the cocoon . The worm
is protected by the warmth of the cocoon.
Similarly the shrug would be giving us
warmth and the sleeves of the shrug can
be adjusted according to the needs ,
similarly it is a reversible one which gives
women two options in one
Along with this the fabric used would be
‘ahimsa silk’. Ahimsa silk, also known as
peace silk, is a type of silk that is
purported to be made in a fashion that is
much more humane to the creatures
creating the silk than many traditional
methodologies that involve killing of the
worm which personally I am against.
