•The Kalash live southwest of Chitral, usually
referred to as the Kalash Valley.
•There are in fact three separate Kalash valleys,
together called Kalasha Desh. 01

•A total population of between 3500-4500 is
present.
•They speak the Dardic language.
•They are known as black kafirs.
• It is said that these people are Hellenic descendants of the armies of
Alexander the Great.
• Kalasha peoples firmly believe that originally they came from a place
called Tsiyam
• Tsiyam is identified by some anthropologists as the area of Tibet and
Ladakh
• It is also said that people from Nuristan were being forcibly converted
to Islam, which is why they fled the land and settled in kalash valley.
• The Kalash referred to as polytheist but most kalash claims that they
are monotheist and called God as Dezau

• They worship, and even sacrifice animals, to some kind of spirits in
outdoor temples.
• There is a strong belief of purity and impurity in the Kalasha culture.

•They make their own wine
• The Kalash women are liberal, they can also have right to
divorce.
• They are famous for their festivals, drum is the only
instrument which they use during festivals.
•They leave dead bodies exposed to weather and dance
around it for 3 days
The Kalash celebrates three main festivals:
• Chilam Joshi Festival: (Kalash spring
festival)

festival)
• It
serve as a symbol of identity
• Women wore black robes embroided with
cowerie shells.
•There head dress is also made up of shells
and bells weighing 4 pound.
• Lerounis is known as a Greek messiah in the valley
• From Kalasha culture to economy to religion, he
enlightened the community about themselves and their
history in schools.
• Introduced the elderly of the town to his school
• He helped Kalasha people to put their language into a
written form for the first time.

hospital, library, hostel and school complex for the
Kalasha
• Healthcare facilities are non-existent
• children walk on foot for many kilometers to attend school
• destroyed irrigation facilities and smashed bridges across streams due
to flood.
• Locals rarely land government jobs
• the Kalash students are forcefully taught Islamiyat and compelled to
convert to the majority faith.
• Non availability of Kalasha teacher in their schools.
