TOURNAMENT STYLES

PLF4MI- Recreation and Healthy Active Living Leadership

Tournament Organization
The 3 most popular styles of tournaments in high schools -

1. Round Robin
2. Elimination
3. Challenge
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A TOURNAMENT STYLE?

1. Type of activity/game
2. The number of teams or players
3. The amount of time available
4. The facilities available
5. The equipment available
Once you have chosen your style you must….
1. Set up the draw (consider rankings and byes)
2. Create a schedule
3. Create a tournament score sheet you can post
Round Robin
Each team gets to play every other team once.

Create a 7 team round robin tournament draw.

7 Team Round Robin Tournament
Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5 Round 6 Round 7

1 vs 2 1 vs 4 1 vs 6 1 vs bye 1 vs 7 1 vs 5 1 vs 3

7 vs bye 5 vs 7 3 vs 5 2 vs 3 4 vs 2 6 vs 4 bye vs 6

Note - What is a bye?

Rotate numbers counter-clockwise around the one fixed number

Now create a schedule…...

Advantages and Disadvantages

???????
Elimination Tournaments
Teams are eliminated after a set number of loses.

3 Kinds

Single Elimination (March Madness)

Consolation Tournament

Modified Double Elimination

Single Elimination
First step - determine whether the number of teams is an even power of 2 (2, 4, 8,
16, 32, 64). If the number of teams is not a power of 2, you must add in byes (free
matches). If you had 14 teams, you would subtract 14 from the next higher power
of 2 to determine the number of byes.

16 - 14 = 2
BYES AND SEEDING
Seeding is used to avoid the top teams from meeting until the end of the
tournament.

If you have byes, you MUST give the top seeded teams the byes first.

If no teams are seeded, it is called a “blind draw”.

NOW…...

Draw a 15 team single elimination tournament (blind draw). Call each team (team
1, team 2, team 3 etc)
15 Team Single Elimination Tournament
Consolation Tournaments
- Provides each team with at least two games.
- First-round winners move the right side of the draw (championship side)
while first-round losers move to the left side of the draw (consolation side).
- From the second round on, a loss eliminates a team.
- Both tournament champions and consolation champions are determined.

NOW - draw an eight team consolation tournament

8 Team Consolation Tournament
Modified Double Elimination

- Each team is guaranteed 2 games

- A first round loss does not mean the team must play in a consolation side
- A strong team can have a bad first round game and still win the tournament
- A loss in the second or any subsequent rounds results in elimination
- After the first round, half of the winning teams move right while the other half
moves left.
- Each second round game puts a winning team vs a losing team.
Challenge Tournaments
- Challenge or ladders tournaments work well for individual and partner
activities (badminton, tennis, darts, pickleball)
- Players names are placed on a card like a ladder
- You can challenge up to one or two levels above you
- Winner takes highest spot
- Arrange your own games
- An end date must be advertised to determine a winner.

Tournament Combinations
- Many tournaments will combine two styles together

(start with a round robin and finish with an elimination style tournament)
