Example: Mary can play the piano
1) to express ability:
Ahmed can speak French but he cannot speak Arabic.
Superman can do things that ordinary people can’t.
2) To describe what is allowed or not allowed:
At the park, you can take photos but you cannot pick flowers.
Viewers can eat popcorn at the cinema, but they cannot eat
shawarma.
3) With future meaning:
I don’t think I can come tomorrow. I am very busy.
4) With verbs of perception (hear, see, smell, taste, feel):
I can hear my sister shouting.

BE ABLE TO
to show an ability;

NEED TO
