The Rose Period 1905-1906
• In 1904, Picasso took
interest in the world of
circus performers and
actors.
• Acrobats and the
clown-like Harlequin
often became the
subject for this new
period known as the
Rose Period.

Cubism 1906-1915
• Picasso soon left the
Rose period behind and
began a new
experimental phase
known as Cubism.
• Picasso was interested in
African sculpture and the
way it distorted the body
into imaginative shapes.

• Cubism breaks up an image into shapes and planes,


showing multiple sides of the same object at the same
time.
• Picasso was widely respected for his innovative work.
• “I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”
Classicism 1916-1925
• In 1917, Picasso met
a beautiful dancer
named Olga Kokhlova
and in 1918 they were
married.
• Picasso’s paintings
during this time were
brighter and sunnier
than his prior Cubist
works.
Surrealism 1925-1934
• In 1925 Picasso
became closely
involved with a group
of artists known as
the Surrealists.
• They were interested
in the world of dreams
and spontaneous
behavior.

Barbarism 1937-1946

• In 1937, Picasso was asked to paint a large mural for the


Spanish pavilion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Picasso chose Guernica as his subject.
• The painting shows a series of terrifying scenes showing
the brutality of war and its destructiveness.
World War II
• World War II began in
1939. The Germans
invaded and conquered
France.
• Picasso could have fled,
but he decided to paint
and sculpt.
• Much of his work took on
a somber mood, but by
staying in Paris, the artist
became a symbol of
freedom.

• In spite of the war,
Picasso’s fame
spread all over the
world.
• His lithograph of the
dove became the
International symbol
for world peace.
A Celebration of Peace
The Final Years 1954-1973

• Picasso spent his last years as a celebrity-his art


as well as his person became a myth.
• In this period, Picasso spent a large amount of
time reworking masterpieces by other painters,
such as the Velazquez seen above.

age of 91 in April
1973.
• His remarkable talent
was beyond dispute
and remains a
profound influence on
twentieth century art.
