Introduction

What activities do you usually do in your


everyday living? Form an inventory in your
mind with actions ending in –ing.
Task 1 Guess the –ing word

Volunteers will be picking a slip of paper


containing an –ing word. She/he will act it
out to let their classmates guess the action
word.

GERUNDS ends in –ING and functions as


a noun.
Base form of the verb + ing
GERUNDS are used to express actions
that are real, concrete and completed.
Examples:

Crying will not get you anywhere.


The children, crying and exhausted,
were guided out of the collapsed
house.
Gerund as a Subject

Jogging is my favorite sport.


Exercising is good for our health.
Gerund as a Subject Complement

My favorite exercise is jogging.


As a student, one of his duties is doing
homework.
Gerund as a Direct Object

I thoroughly enjoy jogging.


Juliet decided escaping from her room
soon.
Gerund as Object of Preposition

Joe takes pleasure in running.


You won’t do any good by crying.
The girl was praised for doing her homework
neatly.
