Communication
COMMUNICATION IS THE MANAGERS JOB

What is communication?
Communication is the process by which information is exchanged and
understood by two or more people, usually with the intent to influence or
motivate behavior.
1. A Model Of Communication
The sender encodes the idea by selecting symbols with which to compose a
message and selecting a communication channel.
The receiver decodes the symbols to interpret the meaning of the message.

Open Communication Climate


Open communication means sharing all types of information throughout the
organization, across functional and hierarchical boundaries.
Two characteristics of effective communication:
• Centralized network, team members must communicate through one
individual to solve problems or make decisions.
• Decentralized network, individuals can communicate freely with other team
members. Members process information equally among themselves until
mall agree on a decision.
1. Communication Channels
Channel richness is the amount of information that can be transmitted during a
communication episode.
A continuum of channel richness
2. Communicating To Persuade And Influence Others
Communication apprehension is an individuals level of fear or anxiety
associated with interpersonal communication
3. Communicating With Candor
Communicating with candor means being direct, honest, and clear about what
employees need to do to meet objectives, while also expressing respect for
others and not making people feel slighted, controlled, or exploited
4. Listening
Listening involves the skill of grasping both facts and feelings to interpret a
messages genuine meaning
5. Nonverbal Communication
Nonverbal communication means communicating through actions, gestures,
facial expressions, and behavior rather than through words
ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION
1. Formal Communication Channels
Formal communication channels are those that flow within the chain of
command or task responsibility defined by the organization
2. Personal Communication Channels
Personal communication channels exist outside the formally authorized
channels. Three important types of personal communication channels are:
• Personal Networks
Personal networking refers to the acquisition and cultivation of personal
relationships that cross departmental, hierarchical, and even organizational
boundaries
• The Grapevine
The grapevine carries workplace gossip, a dominant force in organization
communication when formal channels are not functioning effectively
• Written Communication
Written communication skills are becoming increasingly important in todays
collaborative workplace
WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION
1. Social Media
Social media is a group of internet-based applications that allow the creation
and exchange of user-generated content. Social media is reinventing how
people in organizations communicate.
Companies also use social media to build teams that solve problems faster,
share information better among their employees and partners, and respond to
busineess is embracing social media in big way.
