Introduction
• Butterflies are conspicuous species of Earth’s
biodiversity and taxonomically well studied
groups.
• Important pollinators and food chain
components of an ecosystem.
• Exploration of the butterfly fauna thus
becomes important in identifying and
preserving potential habitats under threat.
• Bioindicators: extremely responsive to any
changes in their environment namely
temperature, humidity, light, and rainfall
patterns (Murphy and Weiss, 1988; Brereton
et al., 2010) and the availability of host plants
for ovipositing and larval development
(Fordyce and Nice, 2003)
• Ecological indicators of urbanization (Dwari et
al., 2017)
• Number of Indian butterflies amount to one
fifth of the world’s butterfly species
• Worldwide there are more than 28,000
species of butterflies, with about 80 percent
found in tropical regions.
• From India, 1501 species of butterflies are
recorded and in West Bengal its number is 452
• Recognized as focal species of conservation in
several areas of the world
• Reduction in the amount and the quality of
natural habitats associated with the urban
development negatively affects the nature of
biodiversity
Objectives
1. To access the richness & diversity of
butterflies fauna in and around
Alipurduar College Campus,
Alipurduar, West Bengal, India.
2. To identify and scrutinized the
species of butterfly which are of
conservation importance.
3. To prepare a checklist of the
butterflies

2. Sampling Techniques & Species
Identification
 Campus and its surroundings were surveyed during
November 2017 to September 2019 by using line
transect and quadrate method.
 Butterflies are identified from photographs with
the help of description given by Marshall and De
Niceville (1890), Evans (1932) and Wynter Blyth
(1957).
 The nomenclature and systematic position were
adopted following Varshney (1983), Gunathilagaraj
et al. (1998) and Kunte et al. (2014).
3. Data Analysis: Data analyses were
performed by PAST software Version 3.02
a.Measurement of diversity (Shanon Diversity
Index)
b.Measurement of species richness (Margalef’s
index )
c. Measurement of evenness (Pielou’s Evenness
Index)
d.Dominance and Simpson Index

The Himalyan Five ring (Ypthima sakra) is

Vulnerable species which needs consevation
among the 36 species reported from the sample
area.
Conclusion
• Our study provide the baseline data for the
butterflies of Alipuduar College Campus And
its surrounding areas which will help for
further details work on its distribution,
diversity, abundance and to identify the
potential threats.
• The Campus is rich in butterfly species due
to presence of bushy areas and low
disturbances.
