Community Needs Assessment

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the chapter, the students should be
able to:
1. Understand the definition purpose, and
requirement of a community needs assessment;
2. Prepare and use an appropriate needs
assessment tool and approach; and
3. Consolidate data and formulate an action
plan.
Community and Society
• Community - a social group of people
interacting with one another;
• -determined by geographic
boundaries, living together to attain
certain and common goals.
A community is classified
into:

1. Rural or the open lands - places in


provincial areas, mostly agricultural
type and less dense
2. Urban or the city - nonagricultural
type, dense, and industrialized
3. Suburban, urban, or the capitals -
usually provinces' capital, mux if
agrucultural and industry
Needs Assessment
-part of the planning process;
-focused examination of the way
things currently are and the way
things can or should be in order to
fill a gap in services;
-its result shall be the basis for
preparing an action plan;
Several approaches to
conduct a needs assessment
1. Focus group - focused discussion with select
core group of people by an experienced
evaluator
2. Key Informant - in-depth interview with a
person who has relevant personal experience
3. Community Meeting - gathering of
information from larger groups in a target
population
4. Survey - collecting data to obtain satistical
summary of target population's thoughts,
beliefs, feelings, and opinion

Project Proposal

A project proposal is a detailed description of a


series of activities aimed at soving a certain problem.
According to Nebiu (2002), a proposal should contain
a detailed explanation of:

1. Justification of the project


2. Activities and implementation timeline;
3. Methodology
4. Human, material and financial resources required.
Project Concept
Unless especially intended for a cause, gift-giving activities
should be minimized to avoid the dole-out mentality.For review
purposes, here are samples of project concepts:

• Livelihood - meat processing, soap-making, silkscreen, job fair,


putting-up a cooperative

• Literacy - computer literacy, reading, writing, numeracy tutorials

• Lifelong Skills - welding, electrical wiring, antenna-making,


metal-sheet fabrication

• Health Mission - optical, medical, or dental mission


• Feeding Program - milk feeding supplementary feeding,
cooking and food handling.

• Recreational Activities - sports clinic, talent show-off, zumba,


socialization, acting workshop

• Environmental Advocacies - clean up, drive, beautification,


tree planting, recycling

• Disaster Preparedness - first aid, evacuation drill, rescue and


transfer relief operation

• Industrial Arts - painting crafting, photo video editing, mural


painting
MONITORING

• To ensure effective and efficient implementation of


every project.
• The instructor evaluates and oversees its
implementation to ensure optimal utilization of
resources, progressive and developmental output,
responsiveness and relevance of the project, and
its sustainability
MONITORING

• is the regular observation and recording of activities


taking place in a project or programme.
• is a process of routinely gathering information on all
aspects of a certain project.
• it allows results, processes, and experiences to be
documented and used as a basis to steer decision-
making and learning processes.
