 ELEMENTS OF TRAVEL

 THE NATURE OF A TOUR

TOURISM
 The temporary short-term movement of people to destinations outside
the places where they normally live and work; as well as their activities
during their stay at these destinations.
-Tourism Society from Britain

 Tourism may be defined in terms of particular activities selected by

choice and undertaken outside the home environment.
- Tourism Society, Cardif

 Tourism also comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying

in places outside their usual environment for less than a year for leisure,
business and other purposes.

UNWTO- United Nations World
Tourism Org.
 The agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable
and universally accessible tourism. It is the leading international
organization in the field of tourism, which promotes tourism as a driver
of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental
sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in
advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.

 UNWTO’s membership includes 158 countries, 6 territories and over 500

affiliate members representing the private sector, educational
institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.
Let’s get to know the tourists

 Tourists travel for a number of different reasons.

 Tourists have different needs depending on why they are travelling.

 Tourists use different products and services when they travel.

 Tourists will always remember what they experienced, whether it is BAD OR

GOOD.
2 CLASSES OF VISITORS:

1. TOURIST

resides for a period of AT LEAST 24 HOURS.

 Any person visiting a country other than that of earning money.

2. EXCURSIONIST

 PURPOSE OF TRAVEL
LEISURE TOURISM
 Leisure travel is travel in which the primary motivation is to take a
vacation from everyday life.
 Leisure travel is often characterized by staying in nice hotels or resorts,
relaxing on beaches or in a room, or going on guided tours and
experiencing local tourist attractions.
The push factors were:
(a) escape from a perceived mundane environment
(b)exploration and evaluation of self
(c) relaxation
(d)enhancement of relationships with family and friends
(e) facilitation of social interaction
(f) independence: regain of control over destiny,
(g) travel as a basic need,
BUSINESS TOURISTM
 Business tourism or business travel is a more limited and focused subset
of regular tourism. During business tourism (traveling), individuals are
still working and being paid, but are doing so away from both their
workplace and home.
 Primary business tourism activities include meetings, and attending
conferences and exhibitions.
 business tourism involves a smaller section of the population, with different
motivations, and additional freedom-of-choice-limiting constraints imposed
through the business aspects.
 Destinations of business tourism are much more likely to be areas
significantly developed for business purposes (cities, industrial regions, etc.)
 An average business tourist is more wealthy than an average leisure tourist,
and is expected to spend more money.
MEDICAL TOURISTM

 Medical tourism refers to people traveling to a country other than their

own to obtain medical treatment. In the past, this usually referred to
those who traveled from less-developed countries to major
medical centers in highly developed countries for treatment unavailable
at home.
 may be also for medical services unavailable or non-licensed in the
home country.
VISITING FAMILY/FRIENDS

 Travel for the purpose of visiting friends or relatives (VFR travel) is a

concept first defined by the travel and tourism industry and included
travelers whose main purpose of travel was family‐related, and were
therefore distinct from tourist, business, or long‐term travelers such as
missionaries or other volunteers.
ADVENTURE TOURISTM

 Adventure tourism is a type of niche tourism involving exploration or

travel to remote areas, where the traveler should expect the
unexpected.

 Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity as tourists seek

unusual holidays, different from the typical beach vacation.
