Introduction

PDO’s philosophy, practice and

procedures for waste management
place emphasis on the prevention of
waste generation, followed by 3R
• Reuse,
• Recycle and
• Recover.
Waste Management Objectives
Wastes shall be managed in order to;
• reduce their potential to cause harm to
* health or
* environment, and
• reduce operating costs
• avoid future liabilities.
Waste Management Hierarchy
Pollution prevention – elimination, change or reduction
of operating practices which result in wastes.

Source reduction – generation of less wastes through

more efficient processes

Re-use – the use of materials or products that are reusable in

their original from.

Recycling/recovery – the conversion of wastes into

usable materials, or the extraction of energy or materials from
wastes.

Treatment – the destruction, detoxification and/or

neutralisation of residues.

Responsible disposal – depositing wastes using methods

appropriate for a given situation.
Categories of wastes
The main types of wastes arising from
our operations are :
• non-hazardous wastes
• hazardous wastes
In PDO, we aim to control and minimize
waste generated thus reducing
environmental impact.
Non Hazardous Waste (MD 17/93)
Any solid material or semi solid which does not
have any danger to the environment or to the
human health if it is dealt with in a scientific way

Hazardous Waste (MD 18/93)

Any liquid or solid waste which because of its
quantity, physical, chemical or infectious
characteristics can result in hazards to human
health or the environment when improperly
handled, stored, transported, treated or disposed
of.

demonstrate that the waste has
been managed in a responsible
