CHAPTER 11

Moral Principle 5:
Social Dimension of Private Property
Social Dimension - Concern for the values, norms, rules,
and roles; one of the greatest sources of influence on hu
man behavior, emanating from the cultural dimension.

Private property - is a
legal designation for the
ownership of property by
non-governmental legal
entities
Multiple reasons in favor of property right:

Personal reason- It is a necessary right to exercise personal respon

sibility and self realization towards a more creative development.
Moral reason- In moral reason, it serves as a protection for our fre
edom.
Social reason- It points out that property rights extends help to tho
se person who is in need.
Psychological reason- Here, property rights brought about persona
l initiative, drive and enterprise. So, if all the people have in commo
n to them, they show less interest, that they treat it with less care.
“One may not exercise
his right to private
property if, by exercising
this specific entitlement,
he does something
detrimental to the
common good and public
welfare.”

(John Meisel, 2005)

The right to private property is not an abs
olute right, because it is conditioned by t
wo factors:
1. Our Personal Needs
No one is justified to possess, to own, to ke
ep his exclusive use of what he does not need, p
articularly when he knows in conscience there ar
e many others who are lacking the basic necessi
ties in life.

2. The Higher Needs Of The

Community
Which means that common
good or the public welfare should
prevail over private ownership.
"The world is given to all
and not only to the rich."-
(Ambrosius,395,cited in
Vatican Council II, 1965)

The Universal destination of the goods means that all the

material goods of the earth are not meant to be owned a
nd used by few powerful individuals but, on the contrary
that all inhabitants of this planet can equally own and us
e these goods in accordance with God's original plan.
Everyone’s right to private
property is under what Jo
