FURNITURE
Movable articles or accessories that are used to make a room or building suitable for living or
working in.
Furnitures can be a product or design and is considered a form of decorative art.
It can be said as the basic unit used at every place human resides and can be used to provide
efficient space, storage, comfort, decor, and in many other ways to ease human life.
Over the period of time furniture were changed with material used, shape, size, purpose and
the need of the user.
PREHISTORIC FURNITURES
Early humans are likely to have used tree stumps as seats, rocks as rudimentary tables, and
mossy areas for sleeping. around 30,000 years ago, people began constructing and carving
their own furniture, using wood, stone and animal bones.
Furniture pieces found were: bed, cupboards, dressers, thrones, shelves, seats etc.
ANCIENT EGYPT FURNITURES
The period around 3200 BC, Egyptian art developed significantly, and this included furniture
design. Egyptian furniture was primarily constructed using wood, but other materials were
sometimes used, such as leather, and pieces were often adorned with gold, silver, ivory and
ebony, for decoration.
Furniture pieces found were: stool, full chairs, tables, beds, storage chest etc.
ANCIENT GREEK FURNITURE
Knowledge of Greek furniture is derived from various sources, including literature, terracotta,
sculptures, statuettes and painted vases and furniture is known to have been decorated with
ivory, tortoise shell, glass, gold or precious materials.
Furniture found were: backless stool, kline, tables, chests etc.
ANCIENT ROMAN FURNITURE
Roman furniture was based heavily on Greek furniture, in style and construction. They have
some limited innovation outside of Greek influence, and styles distinctly their own.
Roman furniture was constructed mainly using wood, metal and stone with marble and
limestone.
Furniture pieces found were: couches, stools, beds etc.
MEDIVAL FURNITURE
5TH-15TH CENTURY:
Very few extant pieces of furniture survived and evidence of literature is also scarce. It is
likely that the style of furniture prevalent in late antiquity persisted throughout the middle
ages. These furniture were usually heavy, oak, and ornamented with carved designs.
15th-18th CENTURY:
The renaissance marked a rebirth of design, often inspired by by the greco-roman style.
Baroque designs were frequently incorporated a profusion of vegetal and scrolling ornament.
Few other styles developed were- palladianism, louis quinze, rococo etc
18th and 19th century:
During 18th century the fashion was set in england by the french art. The era when louis XIV
was reigning in france, most of the furniture had metal and enamelled decorations with
precious stones.
The 19th century was usually defined by concurrent revival styles including gothic,
neoclassicism, rococo and other styles developed by renaissance movement.
