Primavera (P6) is comprehensive,


multi-project planning and control
software, built on Oracle and
Microsoft SQL Server relational
databases for enterprise-wide
project management scalability.
P6 enables your organization to
store and manage its projects in a
central location.

P6 supports work breakdown structures
(WBS), organizational breakdown
structures (OBS), Enterprise Project
Structure (EPS), user-defined fields and
codes, critical-path-method (CPM)
scheduling, and resource leveling.
P6 is a complete Project Management
Solution.
It provides flexibility to Manage Multiple
Projects in Centralized location.

P6 provides numerous windows,


each offering a specific area of
functionality.
Examples are following;

DETAIL LAYOUT
Each functional window has a default
bottom Details layout that provides
detailed information about items
selected in the top layout.
For example:
 Activity Details in the Activities window
displays detailed information about a
project activity selected in the top layout.
 Project Details in the Projects window
displays detailed information about the
selected project.

ENTERPRISE PROJECT STRUCTURE

EPS is a hierarchy used to organize


projects.
It is the representation of any
organization’s project structure.
It is created by the organization’s
Project Management Office
Any node in the EPS can contain
projects.

EPS Provides:
 Foundation for enterprise-wide project
management.
 Access to project priorities, scope,
budget, and resource information
across the enterprise.

view resource allocation across multiple
projects.
 Control access to project data at any

EPS comprised of roots, nodes, and


projects;
Root:
 There is usually only one root, which
represents the top level of an
organization.
 A root can be subdivided into many
nodes.

Node:
 Nodes represent different levels within
the structure.
 Nodes can contain an unlimited number
of projects.
Projects:
 Projects represent the lowest level of a
hierarchal branch.
 All projects must be included in a node.

ORGANIZATIONAL BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE
OBS is hierarchical arrangement of
organization’s project management
structure
It is used to control user access to
project data
 All users are assigned to an OBS element
to establish their access to project data.
Designation of Responsible Manager
 OBS element is assigned as Responsible
Manager for work within an EPS node

Open Project Table by using


Enterprise Projects menu option.
OR
Open Project Dialog Box by using
File  Open menu option.
Project Table or Project Dialog box
shows all projects.

Open a single node, indicated by


 All projects under the node are opened.
Open multiple projects under
different nodes.
 Use Ctrl+Click to select more than one
project.
Right Click the Project Icon and
select Open in context menu.

GANTT CHART
The Classic WBS layout displays a
Gantt chart in the top layout and
Activity Details in the bottom layout.
The Gantt chart is divided into two
sections, Activity Table and Bar Area:
Activity Table
 Displays activity data in columns.
Bar Area
 Provides a graphical display of activity
progress over the duration of the project.

ACTIVITY USAGE SPREADSHEET

In Activities Window, click on


Activity Usage SpreadSheet Icon.
Activity Usage SpreadSheet shows
the effort spent on each activity
during entire life of the project.
By selecting an activity from Activity
Table, its usage is highlighted in
Activity Usage Sheet.

Use the Activity Network to view the


relationships between activities and
to better understand the logical flow
of the activities in the project.
In Activities Window, click on
Activity Network Icon.
Left window – Displays the WBS
hierarchy.
Right window – Shows a graphical
display of activities and their
relationships.

LAYOUTS

A layout is a customizable view of


information, combining all the visual
elements that appear on the screen.
The Activities window provides
options for viewing data in layouts.
Click on View  Layout  Open, to
view the “Open Layout” dialog box.
A variety of layouts are available that
provide different views of activity
data.

After selecting a layout, you can


click either “Apply” or “Open”.
Apply
 Displays the selected layout but keeps
the Open Layout dialog box open.
Open
 Displays the selected layout and closes
the Open Layout dialog box.

The Activities window can be


customized and saved as a layout.
Saving layouts for future use allows
you to retrieve information quickly.
Customizable elements include:
 Bars
 Row height
 Columns
 Filters
 Timescale

The Columns dialog box enables you


to select columns to display in the
Activity Table and specify the order
in which they appear.
Right Click on the Header of
Activity Table and Click on
Columns Option to view Columns
Dialog box.

Available Options section – Lists data
items in groups or in a list.
Selected Options section – Lists items
you have chosen to display.
Single arrows – Move highlighted data
items to the other window.
Double arrows – Move all data items to
the other window.
Up/down arrows – Specify the order of
the selected data items.

the position of columns.
Click on Edit Column button to
update the text of column header.

Activity Network.
On Activity window, click on
Activity Details Icon to show the
details of an activity on bottom

SAVING LAYOUTS
Layouts can be saved and shared
with other users to facilitate project
communication.
Use the Save Layout dialog box to
save a layout in the Activities, WBS,
Projects, Assignments, or Tracking
window
Layout, Save – Saves changes to
the existing layout.
Layout, Save As – Prompts you to
save the layout with a new name.

LAYOUT, SAVE AS - OPTIONS
Current User – Only the user
creating the layout will have access
to it in the future.
All Users – All licensed users will
have access to the layout (Global).
Another User – A specified user will
have access to the layout.
Project – Apply the layout to any
project that is currently open in P6
Professional.

LAYOUT, SAVE AS - OPTIONS
Layouts can be global, project-
specific, or user-specific.

CLOSING A PROJECT
Close the project when you are
finished working with it.
On the File menu, click Close All.
It is not necessary to close a project
in order to open another one.
Opening a new project automatically
closes the first one.
