RATIONALE

 The Sagumayon River is a part of a river

system that stretches all the way from the
upper portion of Daraga and spills out into
the Albay Gulf.

 The study is related and supportive of the BU

Comprehensive Land Use Plan by providing
basis for a sound development strategy in
terms of disaster reduction and hazard
mitigation
RATIONALE

A Hazard Reduction and Vulnerability

Analysis study may provide answers to
the current concerns regarding the
condition of the Sagumayon River.

 Aimsto calculate the factor of safety of

the slope using numerical / computer
model and base from the results assess
whether the slope is unstable or stable.
RATIONALE

 Suggest some
measures to reduce
the risk along the
banks of the
Sagumayon River.
MATERIALS & METHODS

a. List of the data gathered to do the analysis:

 Profileof the river

 Cross sections of the river
 Minimum and maximum water level
 Geotechnical data (Soil properties)

b. Stability analysis using Limit Equilibrium

approach
RESULTS & DISCUSSION

a. The profile of the river shows that from

the upstream section, the channel has an
elevation of 47.0m while the downstream
section has an elevation of 39.50m.

b. For the whole stretch of the river, from

Sta. 0+000 to Sta. 0+807.52, the slope
of the river bed is approximately 1°.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION

c. The hydrologic study reveals that the

maximum value of discharge, Q (m3/ sec),
measured during the monitoring period was
0.1460 m3/ s.

d. The maximum velocity, v (m/s), was

recorded to be 0.4735 m/sec for the same
monitoring period.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION
d. For the Geotechnical properties:
 The type of soil along the Sagumayon
River was classified as Poorly Graded
Sand with Sand and Silt (SP-SM).

 Thefriction angle for the four sites are

32°, 29°, 31° and 27°.

 Soilcohesion is essentially zero since

the soil is classified as SP-SM.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION
d. For the Geotechnical properties:
 The average unit weight is 16kN/
cu.m.

 The nature of the soil on-site suggests

that settlement is likely to occur since
the SPT N-values obtained ranges from
2–20 blows/ ft.

0+040 using the soil properties from
BH 4.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION
e. Results of Stability Analysis

A factor of safety less than one indicate an

unstable slope; equal to one, a critically stable
slope, and greater than one as stable.

 Slope stability analysis show that the slope in

Station 0+180 is unstable while the other
sections are stable.

 However, further progression of soil erosion may

also be expected during heavy rainfall if no
intervention is undertaken.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION
e. Results of Stability Analysis

 Determining the appropriate remediation

structures for the Sagumayon River entails a
thorough assessment of topographical,
hydrological and geotechnical properties.

 Mitigatingmeasures may be structural or non-

structural methods. It can be using Gabion and
Mattresses, MSE Walls, Masonry Walls,
Bionegineering Method or combinations of
abovementioned measures.
CONCLUSION
 Theresulting Factor of safety values from the slope
stability analysis ranges from relatively low to
high.

 From the four representative sections used in the

analysis, it is evident that several portions of the
Sagumayon River are susceptible to massive
slope failure due to the poor value of the Factor of
Safety computed.

 Thelowest value of FS was 0.908 and the highest

value of FS was 1.684.
CONCLUSION
 Onlyone section of the four slopes analyzed failed in
the analysis (Station 0+180).The said section has an
approximate angle of 62°.

 The higher the slope angle/ inclination of the

segmented areas the lower Factor of Safety it will
give.

 Thereare a lot of mitigating measures available. We

recommend the appropriate method and doable,
considering the topography, existing structures,
hydrological conditions and soil conditions.
CONCLUSION
 Installing
remediation measures along
Sagumayon River will significantly
improve the factor of safety.

 It is also advised that in the design

process, provision of drainage for the
slope protection structures is important to
prevent the build-up of pore water
pressure.
