When corals are stressed by changes in
What is it conditions such as temperature, light,
or nutrients. They then turn white.
2
How is it caused.
• Coral reef damage is caused by humans
and reef tourism is not monitored carefully.
The coral reef turns white because the
temperature of the water rises. The water
then kill the symbiotic algae living in their
tissues, causing them to turn completely
white. Water temperature rising is caused
by global warming. Physical damage or
destruction from coastal development,
quarrying, destructive fishing practices,
boat anchors and recreational misuse
(touching or removing corals) also causes
bleaching.
