WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE

• A technique by which the work of a project is

divided and sub divided for management, and
control purposes.

• The WBS provides a graphical representation or

textual outline of the project scope.

• To construct a WBS, Project Manager experts

identify the main functional deliverables and break
them into tasks, sub-tasks and further into work
packages.

What is a Project Manager?

A Project Manager is a
professional in the field of
project management. Project
managers have the
responsibility of the planning,
procurement and execution of a
project, in any undertaking that
has a defined scope, defined
start and a defined finish;
regardless of industry.

LEVELS

• The depth of the WBS is dependent upon the size and complexity of
the project and the level of detail needed to plan and manage it.

•The first level describes the product we want to achieve once the project is
complete.

By meeting with the stakeholders, the team can start decomposing the
product into smaller, more manageable components.

•This is what the level 2 is showing below:

If we take the component called “Wheels” for example, we
may want to break it down into several pieces. However, the
team has to decide how much detail the work really requires.

For this example, we can just break this level into two
pieces:

Finally, there could be a component that needs more details for
other reasons. In our example, the team decides to bring even
more detail to the component called “Testing”. Based on the
project’s needs, there could be a reason to add three more work
packages as you can see in the following figure:

RULES

Two Weeks Rule: Any broken down level of the

above structure cannot be smaller than two weeks of
work.

8/80 Rule: Any level of work should not be less than

8hrs of work or more than 80hrs of work.

There are many ways to represent a WBS, such as

Tree, Table, or List. The Tree Type structure is mostly
used and an efficient way of representation.

Advantages/Importance of WBS:

1. Easy to define, organize and manage the project.

2. Improves the efficiency of the project.

3. Helps to estimate the resources required, such as

cost, time, staff, etc.

4. Easy allocation of resource based on the

importance of the task/sub-task.

5. Easy to identify potential risks in a given project.
