Participial Phrase?

 A participial phrase comes:


 after noun,
 from reduced/ shortened relative clause (adjective
clause),
How to reduce an adjective clause?

 Only “who, which, that” (Subject of relative pronoun) can be


reduced.
 Omit the relative pronoun (who, which, that)
 Omit the be form of the verb if there is one.
 Change the verb into verb-ing if the sentence is in active.
 Let the Verb-3 (past participle) as it is if the sentence is in passive.
Examples:

1. The woman is beautiful. She is wearing a red scarf. (2 simple


sentences)
 The woman who is wearing a red scarf is beautiful. (A complex
sentence with an adjective clause: who is wearing a red scarf).
 The woman who is wearing a red scarf is beautiful.
 The woman is wearing red scarf is beautiful.
 The woman wearing red scarf is beautiful.
2. The letter arrived today. It was written last week.
 The letter which was written last week arrived today.
 The letter which was written last week arrived today.
 The letter was written last week arrived today.
 The letter written last week arrived today.
3. The pitcher is on the table. It is full of iced tea.
 The pitcher which is full of iced tea is on the table.
 The pitcher full of iced tea is on the table.
4. The woman is a tour guide. I just met her a few minutes ago.
 The woman whom I just met a few minutes ago is a tour guide.
 Can’t be reduced!
5. My house is very big. It is located in LA.
 My house, which is located in LA, is very big. (defining adjective clause)
 My house, located in LA, is very big
 Located in LA, my house is very big.
6. Jackie Chan is an actor. He lives in Hongkong.
 Jackie Chan, who lives in Hongkong, is an actor.
 Jackie Chan, living in Hongkong, is an actor.
 Living in Hongkong, Jackie Chan is an actor.
