Noli Me Tangere Published In Berlin
• In March 1887, Rizal’s first novel “Noli Me Tangere” came of the press.
• Dr. Maximo Viola – his friend from
Bulacan, arrived in Berlin and loaned him the needed funds to publish the novel. Idea of Writing a novel in the Philippines
• Uncle Tom’s Cabin – written by
Harriet Stowe, a novel that inspired Dr. Jose Rizal to prepare a novel that would depict the miseries of his people under the lash of Spanish tyrants. He was then a student in the Central University of Madrid . • January 22, 1884 – Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines by a group of Filipinos at the Paterno residence in Madrid. His proposal was unanimously approved by those present. • Those who agreed in Rizal’s proposal are the following: -The Paternos (Pedro, Maximino, and Antonio) -Graciano Lopez Jaena -Evaristo Aguirre -Aduardo de Lete -Julio Llorente -Melecio Figueroa -Valentin Ventura Unfortunately, Rizal’s project did not materialize. Those patriots who where expected to collaborate did not do anything. The novel was designed to cover all phases of Philippine life. His companions, instead of working seriously on the novel, wasted their time gambling or flirting with Spanish senoritas but Rizal was still determined to do the novel-----alone. The Writing of Noli
• Toward the end of 1884, Rizal began
writing the novel in Madrid and finished about one-half of it.
• 1885 – he went to Paris after
completing his studies in Central University in Madrid. And there, he continued writing the Novel, finishing one-half of the second half. • Rizal finished the last fourth of the novel in Germany. • He wrote the last few chapters of Noli in Wilhelmsfield in April to June, 1886. • In Berlin during the winter days of February 1886, Rizal made the final Revisions on the manuscript of Noli. • Sick and penniless, Rizal saw no hope of having it published, so that in a momentary fit of desperation, he almost hurled it into flames. • Dr. Maximo Viola – a friend of Rizal
who was a scion of a rich family in San Miguel, Bulacan. - he sent Rizal a telegram that he was coming to Berlin. - he gladly agreed to finance the printing of Noli and also loaned Rizal cash money for living expenses. Dr. Maximo Viola • Elias and Salome – a chapter that Rizal deleted from his manuscript to save printing expenses . • February 21, 1887 – the Noli was finally finished and ready for printing. • Berliner Buchdruckrei-Action- Gesselschaft – the printing shop where Noli Me Tangere was printed with a rate of 300 pesos for 2,000 copies. Rizal suspected as a French Spy • Chief police of Berlin – paid a sudden visit to Rizal’s boarding house and requested for the latter’s passport. He gave Rizal four (4) days to secure a passport. • Count of Benomar – the Spanish ambassador who promised Rizal that he will help him but failed to keep his promise because it turned out that he has no power to issue the required passport. • March 27, 1887 – the Noli Me Tangere
came off the press. Rizal immediately sent the first copies of the printed novel to his intimate friends. • March 29, 1887 – in token for his appreciation and gratitude, Rizal gave Viola the galley proofs of the Noli carefully rolled around the pen that he used in writing. The Title of the Novel
• Noli Me Tangere – a Latin phrase
which means “Touch Me Not” which is not originally conceived by Rizal, for he admitted taking it from the Bible. The “Noli” Based on Truth
• The Noli Me Tangere was a true story
of the Philippine condition during the last decades of Spanish rule. The facts, the places, the characters and situations really existed. • Elias and Salome – a chapter which
has been deleted in the original manuscript of Noli Me Tangere. It follows the Chapter XXIV- “ In The Woods”. This chapter was deleted by Rizal to reduce the printing cost. The End…
Injustice to Hero’s Mother Before June of 1872, tragedy struck the Rizal family. Doña Teodora was suddenly arrested on a malicious charge that she and her brother, Jose Alberto, tried to poison the latter’s perfidious wife. Jose Alberto, a rich Biñan Illustrado, had just returned from a business trip in Europe. During his absence his wife abandoned their home and children. When he arrived in Biñan, he found her living with another man. Infuriated by her infidelity, he planned to divorce her. Doña Teodora, to avert family scandal, persuaded him to forgive his wife. The family trouble was amicably settled, and Jose Alberto lived again with his wife. However the evil wife with the connivance of the Spanish lieutenant of the Guardia Civil, filed a case in court accusing her husband and Doña Teodora of attempting to poison her. This lieutenant happened to have an ax to grind against the Rizal’s family, because at one time Don Francisco (Rizal’s father) refused to give him fodder for his ho
