CLOUD COMPUTING
Cloud computing is moving data away from the desktop and the
portable PC and simply displaying the results of computing that
takes place in a centralized location and is then transmitted via
internet to user’s Screen.
-John Markoff
(NY Times Blog)

Cloud computing is the mode of delivering the services on a

virtualized and scalable platform using internet technologies.

WHY CLOUD COMPUTING?

Cloud computing

o No buying of IT Equipment /Licences

o No IT sustenance Staff

o Periodic drills patch management done by service

provider

o Risk of IT infrastructure failure passed to provider

o Pay per Transaction/Hours of Usage

TYPES OF RESOURCES
There are 4 types of resources in Cloud Computing , they are:-

1. Infrastructure Resource

2. Software resource including middleware and development

resource

3. Application Resource

4. Business Process
VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY

• In a Cloud, virtualization refers primarily to platform

virtualization, or the abstraction of physical IT resources from the
users and applications using them.

• Virtualization allows servers, storage devices, and other hardware

to be treated as a pool of resources rather than discrete systems, so
that these resources can be allocated on demand.

• Virtualization is “something which is not REAL, but displays the

full qualities of the REAL”.
TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION
 Platform virtualization is performed on a given hardware
platform by a control software, called a hypervisor or virtual
machine monitor. This software creates a simulated computer
environment, called a virtual machine, for its guest software.

 Higher Utilization Rates: Through virtualization, workloads

can be encapsulated and transferred to idle or underused systems.
This means that existing systems can be consolidated, so
purchasing additional server capacity can be delayed or avoided.
TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION
 Resource Consolidation: Virtualization allows for consolidation of
multiple IT resources. Beyond server and storage consolidation,
virtualization provides an opportunity to consolidate the systems
architecture, application infrastructure, data and database ,
interfaces , networks , desktops and even business processes
resulting in cost savings and greater efficiency.
 Lower Power Usage/Costs: Using virtualization to consolidate
makes it possible to cut total power consumption and save
significant costs.
 Space Savings: Server sprawl remains a serious problem in most
datacenters, but datacenter expansion is not always an option, with
expensive building costs and cooling costs
SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE(SAAS)
 Defined as service-on-demand, where a provider will license
software tailored
 Infrastructure providers can allow customers’ to run applications
off their infrastructure, but transparent to the end user
 Customers can utilize greater computing power while saving on

the following
– Cost
– Space
– Power Consumption
– Facility
PLATFORM AS A SERVICE
 Provides all the facilities necessary to support the complete
process of building and delivering web applications and
services, all available over the internet

 Infrastructure providers can transparently alter the platforms

for their customers’ unique needs

 Google App Engine, Heroku, Mosso, Engine Yard, Joyent or

force.com (SalesForce platform) are few of the examples of
service providers.
DYNAMIC NETWORK SECURITY
• Dynamic Network Security is build to satisfy the stated challenges
is presented.
 Rule Set Generation: Network security and protection for the
virtual worker nodes is enforced on domain 0 by dynamic
firewall rules. The basic template allows access to the LDAP,
NFS and HTTP services by default and limits the network speed
(this could be a default value or a value given by a SLA.)
 Firewall Actions: To actually protect the network with the
generated rules, the XGE has to deploy the script to the
privileged domains 0 on the virtual worker nodes. The XGE
contains a list of VMs on which the application is executed.
DYNAMIC NETWORK SECURITY
 Traffic Limitations: To ensure that network connection bandwidth
is not misused, the traffic of VMs can be limited. A default rate for
all traffic is defined by the base template. Furthermore, it is
possible to define limits for all types of connections based on a
single port or port ranges, protocols or sets of hosts.
 Protection against Denial-of-Service attacks: Besides preventing
bandwidth abuse from internal users, Denial-of-Service (DoS)
protection is another threat the solution has to deal with. However,
a complete and bullet-proof protection against this type of attack is
not available. If only the attackers’ bandwidth and the number of
attack nodes is high enough, nearly every infrastructure could be
spammed with unwanted traffic.
WIDE SPECTRUM OF USAGE

Google: MapReduce
 Divides performing computation reliably from computing over large
data.
 Provides reliable, scalable platform on which to develop distributed
applications.
 Google App Engine
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud “Amazon EC2”
– web service interface that provides resizable computing capacity in
a cloud
– designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers
– allows developers to pay only for capacity that they actually use
FACTS OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 In June 2009, a study conducted by VersionOne found that 41% of senior IT
professionals actually don't know what cloud computing is and two-thirds of
senior finance professionals are confused by the concept, highlighting the
young nature of the technology.

 Google invests more than $2 billion a year in data centers for cloud
computing.

 The profit of companies have increased by 18% after using Cloud Computing.

 Most Companies, now believe that Cloud Computing is going to lead in

future , it would be used by each and every company to improve profits.
