PARABLE OF THE SOWER

PARABLE OF THE SOWER

WHAT IS PARABLE OF GROWING SEEDS?
• The Parable of the Growing Seed is thus about the growth of the
kingdom of God until Jesus returns, during which time we must
patiently sow the seed of the Word in anticipation of a harvest.
The parable refers to an intervening time between the first and
second coming of Jesus as the Messiah.
WHY DID JESUS SPEAK IN PARABLES?
• According to Matthew, Jesus speaks in parables because the
people do not see, hear and understand him. The reason for their
inability to comprehend, is their rejection of Jesus.
THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER

* (MATTHEW 13:1-4 ; MARK 4:1-9 ; LUKE

8:4-8), WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?
WHAT EVENTS LED UP TO JESUS
TELLING THE PARABLE?
- Matthew (Matt 12) reveals that Jesus is
under increasing scrutiny and attacks by the
Pharisees as they challenge His authority.
Mark (Mark 3) reveals that the Pharisees are
plotting with the Herodians (aristocratic Jews
who support Herod Antipas) to destroy Jesus.
Luke (Luke7) reveals that Jesus is going
around preaching and proclaiming the
kingdom of God.
THE DIFFERENCES IN THE STORY OF THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER IN THE
GODPEL OF MATTHEW,MARK AND LUKE
Matthew 13:1-9
• 1) That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea.
• 2) And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd
was standing on the beach.
Mark 4:1-9
• 1) He began to teach again by the sea and such a very large crowd gathered to Him that He got
into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. 2) And He
was teaching them many things in parables.
Luke 8:4-8
• 4) When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to
Him, He spoke by way of a parable:

Observations:
• Matthew and Mark indicate that the location is by the Sea of
Galilee. Luke indicates that a large group of people were
gathering "from town after town."
SOME SEEDS FELL ON THE ROCKY GROUND

Matthew 13:1-9
• 5) Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because
they had no depth of soil. 6) But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they
withered away.

Mark 4:1-9
5) Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had
no depth of soil. 6) And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

Luke 8:4-8
• 6) Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.

Observations:

• Each gospel account reveals different details about the parable.

ROCKY GROUND

PARABLE;
• Some seed fell on rocky ground where there was little soil. The seed soon sprouted, but when the sun came
up it burnt the young plants.
MEANING
• The seed on the rocky ground represents people who respond with initial enthusiasm, but the word of God
does not sink in deep. When persecution or hard times (represented by the sun) come along they give up at
once.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR TODAY
• People cannot commit to the Christian lifestyle. They are initially attracted but give up when the life gets tough.
.What does the second soil in the parable of the sower
represent?
Matthew 13:20-21
20.The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and
immediately receives it with joy; 21) yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when
affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.

Mark 4:16-17
16. In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear
the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17) and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only
temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away.

Luke 8:12
13) Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no
firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.
What does the second soil in the parable of the
sower represent?
• Whether Jesus was making a comment about the saved and unsaved, it is
not clear. However, as Jesus is explaining this parable to His disciples in
regard to the kingdom, it is clear that the kingdom is not determined by how
one initially responds to the gospel. All three gospel accounts record that the
"word was received with joy;" yet Jesus wanted the disciples to know that the
person fell away, because he did not fully understand, believe or trust the
good news of the kingdom when challenged by his peers or culture.
