INTRODUCTION
• The system is designed in order to calculate the energy
consumption of a load in units and the cost incurred over the
use in rupees in accordance to the number of hours that the
load is to be used.
• Result is instant.
• The outcome is given in few second permitting client to Save
time utilized in energy audits.
• The modelled energy meters utilizes the KEIL Micro Vision
(IDE) and embedded C-language for programming.
ABSTRACT

• The project is designed to evaluate consumption of any load in

units and cost in rupees as per the energy tariff and the number
of hours the load is going to be used. The evaluation is almost
instantaneous thus assisting the user to save hours of waiting
time for the load survey.
WHAT IS AN ENERGY
AUDIT?
An energy audit is an
• inspection,
• survey and
• analysis of energy consumption with possible conservation in
domestic sector or industrial environment etc.
As unit cost of electricity is very high these days it is essential to
know if a particular device or instrument is energy efficient or not.

Figure 1. BLOCK DIAGRAM OF PROJECT

WORKING
• This project itself consists of an instant energy auditing system
using AT89S52 microcontroller which is able to calculate the
consumed units.
• An energy meter gives 3200 impulses/kwh which is connected
through octocoupler to the microcontroller AT89S52, then after
the data processed by the microcontroller, the information is
displayed to the LCD display.
WORKING
• 4 buttons i.e. up, down, normal and reset buttons are present to
feed data into the microprocessor to input the values and the
tariff rates.
• Relay is connected to the device to on/off the supply through
the load.
• 230 V Transformer is used through which system is powered.
• Through that 4 buttons we can actually input the value in
rupees per unit cost and it will calculate the load through the
system, after that we need to enter the number of usage of
hours of that device and it will automatically show the cost
incurred in rupees and units consumed in that interval of time.

SMART ENERGY METER OR PROGRAMMABLE METER

• A smart meter is an electronic device for monitoring and

billing.
• Smart meters typically record energy hourly or more
frequently, and report at least daily.
• Smart meters enable two-way communication between the
meter and the central system.
• it enables two-way communication between the meter and the
supplier which can be wireless or wired.

MICROCONTROLLER AT89S52

FIG.4. MICROCONTROLLER LAYOUT

DESCRIPTION OF MC AT89S52
• The microcontroller has built in ROM, RAM, Input Output
ports, Serial Port, timers, interrupts and clock circuit.
• Is a Embedded system.
• The I/O, memory, and on- chip peripherals of a microcontroller
are selected depending on the specifics of the target application.
• Have on-chip facilities such as serial ports, parallel input output
ports, timers, counters, interrupt control, analog-to-digital
converters, random access memory, read only memory, etc.
WHY MICROCONTROLLER
AT89S52?
• 32 general purpose I/O lines
• 4 Input Output Ports
• A serial programmable USART (Universal Synchronous
Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter)
• 4.0-5.5V Operating Range
• 256 x 8-bit internal RAM
• This allows very fast start-up combined with low power
consumption
• Easily available in Market
• Low Cost and easy to use
16X2 LCD DISPLAY
• A 16x2 LCD means it has display 16
characters each line and two lines.

• characters are displayed in pixel matrix.

• A instruction i.e. command given to LCD to

perform a predefined task like initializing
it, clearing its display, placing the cursor
position, controlling screen etc..

• The data register stores the data(ASCII

Value) to be displayed on the LCD.

KEIL C CROSS COMPILER
These are the fundamental components and tools of cross compiler-

• IDE (Integrated Development environment)

• Simulator
• Debugger
• Programmer and project manager
• Linking tool and compiler
TOOLS NEEDED
• Multimeter is needed for testing of electronics pcb based projects
for voltage, connectivity and other issues.
• Soldering iron is used along with soldering accessories to ensure
proper connectivity between components and the pcb surface and
ensure proper working of the system.

ENERGY AUDIT
• An energy audit is an inspection survey and an analysis of
energy flows for energy conservation.
• It may include a process or system to reduce the amount of
energy input into the system without negatively affecting the
output.
APPLICATIONS OF LOAD
MONITORING
•Extremely cost-effective" load identification.
•Cheap detection of startup transients, line or equipment faults, etc.
•Perform surveys of both residential and commercial energy
consumption.
•Demand response system for use on the smart grid.
•Monitor systems on-board ships for safe systems operation with
fewer sensors.
ADVANTAGES
• To monitoring and control of domestic Energy meter
• This system also makes use of display of instant tariff and units
consumed by the appliance and all power usage by consumer.
• Technologies that are more precise and accurate, error free,
efficient etc.
• It saves the time and efforts utilized in auditing.
CONCLUSION
• From this system and project we conclude that we have built and
efficient system to save time.
• The evaluation is almost instantaneous thus assisting the user to
save hours of waiting time for the load survey.
• As unit cost of electricity is very high these days it is essential to
know if a particular device or instrument is energy efficient or not.
• Auditors doesn’t have to wait for all day to get readings but
through this system they can do that work very time savingly,
efficiently.
