GUESS WHAT?

EXPLICIT
& IMPLICIT
Let’s watch!
EXPLICIT vs IMPLICIT
Recognizing the Explicit

Explicit information is any idea that is stated. With explicit

information, you see the text explained! Since you are
looking for explicit information in what is read, the explicit
information will be written in the text. There is no need to
look for clues. Just read. If the information is written, it is
explicit.
Processing the Implicit

Implicit information is understood but it is not

stated. To find implicit information in what is
read, you will have to think about what you
read. Look for clues as you read. Implicit
information is not written.
Let’s read an excerpt from “Pres. Ramon Magsaysay, A Man of Action” and think about which ideas
are presented implicitly and explicitly.

“Then you will have the artesian well here right away”, he
said. He ordered the area commander to get pipes and
pump from the armed forces supply depot, and demanded
they should be brought to the spot immediately. He asked
the army to bring in bulldozer, troops, and trainees for
labor, and also organize the civilians.
Let’s read an excerpt from “Pres. Ramon Magsaysay, A Man of Action” and think about which ideas
are presented implicitly and explicitly.

 The answer is, all the sentences from the text are explicit ideas that point out
what Pres. Ramon Magsaysay did to accomplish things during his presidency.
These explicit ideas lead you to the implicit information that Ramon
Magsaysay was indeed a “man of action.
 You can actually find implicit meaning behind the text by asking or writing
“What, Why, and How?” questions about information not directly stated.
 You only have to remember that Explicit information is clearly and directly
stated in the text while Implicit information is not expressly stated. It must be
inferred or concluded based on available details.
All living things are made up
of cells. Since humans are
alive, we are also made of

Type what’s in the text and/or

type what’s in your head.
EXPLAIN! 
When the teacher:
 repeats the words or phrases for emphasis.
 spells out important words.
 lists on board, or reads a list, allows time to
take notes.
VERBAL  speaks more slowly.
CUES  speaks more loudly.
 stresses certain words.
 uses a different voice tone.
 asks questions not meant to be answered by
students.
The many different types of nonverbal
communication or body language include:
 Facial expressions. The human face is extremely
expressive, able to convey countless emotions without

NON- saying a word. ...

 Body movement and posture. ...

VERBAL  Gestures. ...

 Eye contact. ...
CUES  Touch. ...
 Space. ...
 Voice. ...
 Pay attention to inconsistencies
Read the text and analyze the verbal and non-verbal clues:

Tough it up man. It’s just a little bruise. We’re going to get you home now,” Andre
said, his voice alternating between terror and toughness. He and Leslie pulled
Sampson up from the ground. “Can you walk, man?”
Sampson put one foot down, then tried the other. He cringed, cried out, and then
slumped back against his brother. “I can’t,” he said, shaking his head. Sampson
took several deep breaths. Sweat poured off his face.
Andre looked at Leslie. The rest of the boys had somehow disappeared. “We’d
got to carry him, man.” Leslie nodded, and the two of them hoisted the smaller boy
between them and carried him home, down the same street, which now seemed
even hotter.
Tell whether the piece of information is explicit or implicit.

1. Andre told Sampson to “tough it up”.

2. Leslie and Andre picked Sampson up.
3. Sampson was sad and depressed that his foot was hurt.
4. Sampson could not walk on his foot.
5. Andre, Leslie and Sampson are all best friends.
6. Leslie and Andre carried Sampson home.
7. Sampson was sweating.
8. Sampson hurt his foot playing football.
9. Andre was annoyed that Sampson got hurt.
10. Sampson’s mom got worried.
