PRESENT TENSE
WHAT IS THE PRESENT TENSE?

The present tense is a grammatical tense whose principal function


is to locate a situation or event in the present time. The present
tense is used for actions which are happening now.

The present tense is mainly classified into four parts:


 Simple present
 Present perfect
 Present continuous
 Present perfect continuous

The simple present is a verb tense with two main uses. We use
the simple present tense when an action is happening right
now.
Simple
Present RUMUS :
(+) Subject + verb 1 (+ s/es) + object (?) Do/does + subject + verb 1 + object?
Subject + to be (am/is/are) + adjective/adverb To be (am/is/are) + subject + adjective/adverb?
Example : She is very polite and kind Example : Is she polite and kind?
(-) Subject + do/does not + verb 1 + …
· Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + adjective/adverb
Example : She is not very polite and kind

The Present Continuous Tense is a form tense which refers to the current
action or when the conversation is taking place. 02
RUMUS :
Present
(+) subject + to be (am, is, are) + Verb – ing + object continous
Example : She is doing her homework now
(-) subject + to be + not + verb – ing + object
Contoh : She is not doing her homework now
(?) to be + subject + verb – ing + object
Contoh : Is she doing her homework now?
The present perfect tense refers to an action or state that either occurred at

03 an indefinite time in the past (e.g., we have talked before) or began in the past
and continued to the present time (e.g., he has grown impatient over the last
hour). This tense is formed by have/has + the past participle.
Present
RUMUS :
Perfect (+) I/You/We/They + have + verb 3
He/She/It + has + verb 3
Example : They have lived in Jakarta for a long time
He has learned English for one year
(-) I/You/We/They + have + not + verb 3
He/She/It + has + not + verb 3
Example : They have not lived in Jakarta for a long time
He has not learned English for one year
(?) Have + I/You/We/They + verb 3?
Has + He/She/It + verb 3?
Example : Have they lived in Jakarta for a long time?
Has he learned English for one year?
The present perfect continuous tense is a form of the verb
04 used to express an action that has been completed at a
point in the past or an action has started in the past and
Present continues to the present. The action in this tense is usually
of a certain duration and is of relevance to the present
Perfect condition.
Continous
RUMUS :
(+) S + have/has + been + -ing /present participle
Example : She has been driving
(-) S + have/has + not + been + -ing/present participle
Example : She has not been driving
(?) have/has + S + been + -ing/present participle
Example : Has she been driving ?

PAST TENSE
WHAT IS THE PAST TENSE ?
The past tense is a verb tense used for a past activity
or a past state of being.
EXAMPLE : I jumped in the lake.
(This is a past activity.)
I was happy.
(This is a past state of being.)

Types of past tense :


 Simple past tense
 Past progressive tense
 Past perfect progressive
 Past perfect tense
Simple Past Tense
The simple past tense is used to describe a completed
activity that started in the past and ended in the past.
RUMUS :
(+) Subject + verb 2 + object
Subject + to be (was/were) + adjective/adverb
Example : We attended the festival last week
She was absent yesterday
(-) Subject + did not + infinitive verb + object
Subject + was/were + not + adjective/adverb
Example : We did not attend the festival last week Past Progressive Tense

PRESENT FUTURE
Present future tense is a form of sentence that is
widely used in basic everyday speech because this
form is used to show events in the future or that will be
done in the future.

Types of present future :


 Simple future tense.
 Future continuous tense.
 Future perfect tense.
 Future perfect continuous tense.
Simple Future Tense
Simple future tense is a tense sentence used to denote events
that have not happened or will happen in the future and end in
the future.
RUMUS :
(+) S + will + Verb 1 + O Future Continous Tense
S + To Be (is, am, are) + Going To + Verb 1 + O future continuous tense is a tense that indicates that

Future Perfect Tense
The future perfect tense is for talking about an
action that will be completed between now and
some point in the future.

RUMUS :
(+) Subject + will + have + Verb 3
Example : I will have left.
(-) Subject + will + not + have + Verb 3
Example : I will not have left
(?) Will + Subject + have + Verb 3?
Example : Will I have left?
(?) Will + not + Subject + have + Verb 3?
Example : Will not I have left?
Future Perfect Continous
The future perfect continuous, sometimes called the
future perfect progressive, is a verb form that describes
an action that will continue to a point in the future.
RUMUS :
(+) S + Will/Shall + Have + Been + V1-ing + O +
Since/For + adverb of time
Example : I shall have been sitting under the tree
since 10 A.M.
(-) S + Will/Shall + not + Have + Been + V1-ing + O +
Since/For + adverb of time
Example : She will have been swimming with her
boyfriend for 3 hours.
(?) Will/Shall + S + Have + Been + V1-ing + O +
Since/For + adverb of time.
Example : Sill she have been swimming with her
boyfriend for 3 hours?
