PLACE DESIGNER TO IDENTIFY AND
DEVELOP WHAT’S NEEDED FOR
THE DEMOGRAPHIC THAT IS
GOING TO OCCUPY IT. IT MEANS
CREATING ADAPTABLE AND
FLEXIBLE SPACES THAT BEST
SUPPORT THE ACTIVITY THE
BUILDING IS MEANT TO HOST, BUT
IT ALSO MEANS LOOKING AT THE
WHOLE SITE FOR POSSIBILITIES IN
REINFORCING THE MESSAGE
TRYING TO BE SENT WITH THE
ARCHITECTURE.

architectural design of the building, but it
also includes the adjacent surroundings.

Creating a Sense of
Place Has an Impact
on Occupants
THE FIRST IMPRESSION OF A SPACE IS SOMETHING

THAT’S AUTOMATIC. BUT CREATING A TRUE SENSE
OF SPACE GOES DEEPER THAN THAT. WE CONSIDER
THE FIRST IMPRESSIONS AND THEN DELVE DEEPER
TO FURTHER DELIVER THE UNEXPECTED. WE WANT
TO CREATE MULTIPLE TOUCH POINTS
THROUGHOUT A BUILDING, CREATING AN
EXPERIENCE THAT REVEALS ITSELF AS YOU GO
THROUGH THE BUILDING AND GOES BEYOND THAT
INITIAL FIRST IMPRESSION.
DIFFERENT BUILDING TYPES HAVE DIFFERENT GOALS FOR THE
TYPE OF SPACE THEY WANT TO CREATE. IN WORKPLACES, IT
MIGHT BE ABOUT WHAT DESIRABLE AMENITIES ARE OFFERED TO
EMPLOYEES, IN ADDITION TO BEING A COMFORTABLE PLACE TO
WORK. COLORS AND BRAND INTEGRATION ARE POTENTIALLY
IMPORTANT FOR CREATING A SENSE OF IDENTITY, AND THE WAY
DESIGNERS HANDLE THAT CAN BE NUANCED AND HIGHLY
IMPACTFUL.
IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES, PEOPLE ARE THERE FOR A VARIETY

OF REASONS AND QUITE OFTEN IT CAN BE A STRESSFUL
TIME. THE BEST TREATMENT CENTERS KNOW HOW THEY
RESPOND AND HOW THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED CAN GREATLY
IMPACT THE PATIENT AND VISITOR’S RECOVERY AND
EXPERIENCE. A THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED SPACE CREATES A
SENSE OF WELLBEING AND POSITIVITY. THOUGHTFUL DESIGN
HAS REDEFINED THE WHOLE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY.

SENSE OF TIME
Time can be defined as the system of those
relations which any event has to any other
as past, present, or future; or indefinite
continuous duration regarded as that in
which events succeed one another; or a
particular period considered as distinct
from other periods

The concept of time is interrelated with other
concepts like experience, motion, human
actions and consciousness and space. That is
why it is attempted to integrate the element of
time into the understanding of designers and
architects, in respect of analyzing the social
processes involved in the making of space and
place.

The perceived, lived and experienced world has
gained a new feature with the developments of
knowledge and communication technologies.
From the years that mechanical clock was
invented the speed has increased and time
perception has altered throughout new eras.
With the effects of technological inventions,
time perception, and related with that, the socio-
cultural structures of societies change, as well
as the spatial properties

While the transformation of perception of time formed
new spaces, some problems also emerged. Alienation
to nature and disregarding human practices are some of
the mentioned problems. This study stresses that these
altering dynamics break down the ‘physical’ distance.
but create ‘psychological’ or ‘mental’ distance. The
answer to the questions in which way people perceive,
what do they feel, what are the particular needs and
expectations of every individual’ are not the focus of
this paper. But it is obvious that, there is not a universal
or an average human and there is not a single public
interest. The needs and expectations of every time
period are not the same. Building types, forms, facades,
the amount and type of open spaces, the types of public
spaces can be based on the clarified lifestyle, culture,
demographic characteristics and economic
circumstances of the population in time.

The focus is that architectural spaces and objects to be
‘qualified’, is just the obligation of architects and
builders. In any case, they should be aware of the
dynamics which force the society and the city for a
transformation, more than anyone else. Increasing the
quality of lives of societies by offering well-designed
spaces is the essential requirement of architecture
and the design world. Since everything in the world is
under construction, actors in the design world, as the
supposed genius members of the innovative and
creative team, should consistently be searching for
spaces which qualify for new times and new
philosophies, without neglecting the human
experience and the context. Throughout the process of
minimizing ‘physical’ distance, unlike the virtual space,
built environment – concrete space – should be
designed and produced in relation to ‘psychological’
expanse.
