BIOSPHERE

The biosphere is the part of

Earth that contains all the
ecosystems.
ECOSYSTEM
 An ecosystem is a large community of living organisms (plants, animals and
microbes) in a particular area.
 The living and physical components are linked together through nutrient
cycles and energy flows.
 Ecosystems can be of any size, but usually they are in particular places.
 Examples: Forest Ecosystems, Grassland Ecosystems, Desert Ecosystems,
Tundra Ecosystems, Freshwater Ecosystems, Marine Ecosystems
COMMUNITY
Populations that live together
in a specific place.

What type of populations can you find in a

aquatic ecosystem?

Populations in a community competefor the resources in an ecosystem.

POPULATION

Group of organisms of the

same type or species.

What type of population can you find in a

savanna ecosystem?
ORGANISM

COMPETITION
Look at the pictures in the pages 250 and 251.

What are some examples of competition that may be taking place in the
pictures?

Moray eels compete for Aniamls for water in the

space 1 2
Bisons for food
wáter hole 3

The interaction between populations to meet their needs is called

competition
HABITAT
Habitat is the place where an organism lives within an ecosystem.
The habitat of an organism may vary.
ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN

 What type of food do pandas eat?

 What type pf food do sharks eat?

NICHE

A niche is the individual role a species plays in an ecosystem. It

includes how organisms get energy, which is related to what they eat
and transfer energy.
ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN
 How a narrow niche determines tha habitat of a panda?

 How does broad niche affect the habitat of a shark?
