MEDIA

DEFINITION OF
HANNIBAL
By TJ Harvey Kelly
What is • Hannibal is an American crime series
which ran from 2013-2015. Based on
Hannibal? the acclaimed novel “Red
Dragon”, Hannibal focuses on the
police department of Baltimore
struggling to keep up with an influx of
gruesome murders in which victims are
displayed on public and have had their
organs harvested for unknown reasons.
How do • Media Producers view their
audience in grouped
producers demographics, mainly
define an separated into categories such

audience? as age, gender, sexual

orientation, socio-economic
status, religious identity, etc.
Age • Hannibal, being an extremely gruesome and
adult aimed show, is unsurprisingly watched
by mostly adults. The shows second season
“averaged a 0.86 rating in the 18-49
demographic with 2.54 million viewers.”
Whereas the shows third and final season
averaged around “0.38 rating in the 18-49
demographic with 1.31 million total viewers.”

Gender • Although there seem to be no official
statements regarding the gender
demographic for Hannibal, it is widely known
that the show garnered a largely female
gender demographic as shown why in this
article. Although gruesome, the show leans in
on this demographic, with women being the
largest demographic behind crime novel
sales, the show decided to focus in on this
group and tailor the following seasons to its
growing fandom.

Quantitative • Quantitative Research is a form of media
analytics research in which data is gathered in
Research numerical form, such as surveys being
taken  or patterns being measured against the
viewership of the media, i.e., gender, age, etc.
Qualitative • If Quantitative Research focuses on
the numerical value of viewership
Research numbers, Qualitative Research is
the opposite, instead focusing on
non-numerical data such as online
comments, reviews, etc.
Ratings • Although Hannibal was a critically acclaimed show and
is now considered one of the greatest pieces of
fictional television of the past decade, the show was
cancelled in its third season due to poor viewership
ratings.
• Although review scores stayed at a consistently high
number, as is the case with most award-winning
television shows, people’s taste evolves and they move
on to new things at a rapid pace and with such a high
production cost, the show had no other option than to
shut down at the end of its third season.
