Chef

• Depending on the amount of education in the
culinary arts will determine how much experience
you need to become a chef. Straight out of high
Introduction school you can begin working in kitchens as a line
cook or prep chef. Beginning as a prep chef you can
gain experience and more responsibility and
eventually become a head chef.
What is a chef?
• A chef is a professional cook, the chef is usually in charge of
everyone in the restaurant including waiters, cooks, and others.
• I chose chef as my career because I enjoy cooking, I find cooking
fun and relaxing and for me at least it relieves stress.
• I think chef is a good fit for me because I'm a good leader and I
can help people out when they are in stressful situations.
• Another reason is because I can handle stressful situations and as
a chef there will be a lot of situations when the restaurant gets a
lot of customers, I would have to be all over the place in the
kitchen and the restaurant. ( Howtobecome)
• Chefs must review menus and are responsible for
gathering all the ingredients that are needed.
• They must oversee the prep cook with washing, peeling
and mixing of ingredients, if there is no prep cook the
chef must do these tasks.
• The head chef oversees all stations and prepares his own

and • Chefs must be knowledgeable and team oriented, they


determine recipes, handle budgeting and handle supplies.
expectations • Chefs also hire and train others in the kitchen and
supervises daily activities in the kitchen.
• Some chefs lead specific stations such as meat, pasta,
soups and salads.
• Chefs also have administrative work such as inventory,
ordering supplies and maintenance. ( Krow)
Working • A chef works on the weekend and weekdays they work up
to 12 hours a day, usually they work around fifty to seventy

• A chef takes a break when able to do so, they are not
scheduled but goes off on how busy the kitchen is.
• The kitchen can be harsh from being at hot stove, prepping
fruits and vegetables or working in the freezer.
• A chef spends most of the day on their feet, while the day is
not done until the kitchen is completely clean.
• The kitchen can be stressful whether it is busy or slow.
Chefs are always on a different shift and spend many hours
prepping or cleaning. Chefs can not leave the kitchen until
everything in the kitchen is spotless. ( culinary lab)
Tools, technology and skill

• Basic tools needed by every chef are spatulas, micro-planes, tongs,


peelers. An excellent quality chef knife is the most important tool. A tool
is only as good as the chef using it. A chef must have a good space and
a wide assortment of tools.
• Technology can transform any kitchen but not everything can be
improved with gadgets. A sous vide is the process of cooking food that is
sealed in water. A robot coupe is a great gadget that chops, slices, dices,
and purees.
• A chef needs both hard and soft skills to become successful. A chef must
pay attention to detail, be motivational, multitask and have culinary
expertise. ( Escoffier)
To become a chef, you will need a high school
diploma or GED, culinary certificate or a college
degree in the culinary arts.

Most college programs last two to four years.

Education
Certificate programs normally last a few months
and there is fourteen different certifications.

Apprenticeship programs are hands on training


and classroom education are sponsored
through food industry organizations. (Mckever)

certificates.

• Some classes that are required in culinary arts degree


program are
• Entrepreneurship
• Purchasing and cost control
• Farm to table
• Menu design
• Restaurant operations
• Communications
• Science of nutrition ( study)
Additional requirements
• To become a chef a license is not required, you can get
volunteer certifications that cost anywhere between 50 and
110 dollars and must be renewed every five years.
• Most of the testing required are written and practical
exams for most of the cooking classes.
• Apprenticeships are not required but are recommended.
• Internships are a must with most culinary programs, to gain
experience in restaurants, hotels, and catering companies.
• Volunteer working in the field helps a chef gain experience.
• A chef must have experience as a sous chef before they

Chef Career Demand
• The expected growth for chefs and head cook
jobs is ten percent from 2016 to 2026, which is a
high amount, that is a faster average for all
occupations.
• This will help the income to grow which will
cause there to be more quality dishes. Which
will lead to more restaurants to open to satisfy
consumers desire for dining out.
• More chefs are being hired because people want
healthy food that are high quality dishes. (Doyle)
• The salary range for a chef and
head cook in the United States is
twenty-four thousand five
hundred thirty dollars to
seventy-four thousand one
hundred twenty dollars.
Salary Range • The average salary in 2012 was
forty-two thousand four hundred
eighty. (Krow)
• Being a chef has many advancement
possibilities. Depending on your
education and experience one can
become sous chef, head or executive
chef. If a chef becomes knowledgeable
Advancement in business, they can open their own
restaurant. Other chef advancement
Possibilities possibilities could include private chef,
culinary educator, nutrition instructor
and health and safety inspector.

Expenses and
Benefits
• Extra expenses for a chef
would be uniforms,
certification, tools and
equipment. If a chef chooses
to take a position that is in
another area they may have
to pay for their own moving
expenses.
• Retirement and insurance
benefits may be provided by
the employer. If not
provided the chef would
have to pay for their own

Conclusion
• There are many
different ways to
become a head chef,
education experience
and apprenticeships.
Becoming a chef takes
many years but is very
rewarding. A chef of any
type works hard and is
always striving to
become better.
