Ventricular System

 Ventricles of the brain are cavities lined

by special epithelium called ependymal
cells
 Epithelium thrown into folds forming
choroid plexus

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Cont …

 Lateral ventricles in each cerebral

hemisphere
 Third ventricle between diencephalons
 Fourth ventricle in hind brain

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Cont …

 Interventricular foramen between lateral

& third ventricle
 Cerebral Aqueduct of Sylvius in
midbrain between third & fourth vents.
 Foramen of Lushcka & Magenda
between 4th and subarachnoid space.

Epithelium of ventricles
• Simple cuboidal cells = epindymal cells
• Villi in the ventricular surface
• Basal surface applied to foot processes of
astrocytes
• Some cells have elongated processes,
passing through astrocytes to reach blood
capillaries = tanycytes

Cerebrospinal fluid

 Crystal clear fluid produced by choroid

plexus circulate in subarachnoid space
absorbed in the venous sinuses
 Ultrafiltrate of plasma
 70% Secreted by choroid plexus cells
(tanycytes)
 30% by capillary bed &metabolic water
production

Composition

 Blood  CSF
 6500mg/100g  2500mg/100gm
protein protein
 Less Na, Cl, Mg.  More Na, Cl, Mg
 More K, Ca,&  Less K, Ca &
glucose glucose
 Pressure 100 mmHg  Pressure is10 to15
mmHg
 Cells 5/cc mainly
lymphocytes

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Circulation

 Intraventricular space to subarachnoid

space
 Arachnoid granulations to dural venous
sinus (SSS)

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Cont …

 Total amount 140 mls, 25 mls

intraventricular space
 Rate of production 0.35 – 0.40ml/min
 Turnover 50% is replaced every 6 hours

Functions

 Weight of brain outside CSF = 1500gms

 Weight of brain inside CSF = 50 gms
 Stabilizing brain during head movement
 Shock absorber.
 Lymph of brain.

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Abnormalities

 Hydrocephalus
 Excess production called communicating
 Less absorption called obstructive

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam

Dr. Mohd. A/Salam
Cont …

 Reduced amount due to loss

 Head injury leads to fracture base
 Spinal cord defects (spina bifida)
 Herniation and coning of brain stem
