WHAT IS AN MP3 PLAYER?

 An MP3 player is an electronic device that can

play MP3 digital audio files.

 The basic idea of MP3 player was to develop a

portable music source that can easily fit in the palm
of your hands.
HISTORY AND TIMELINE
 1987: The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft Institute in Germany
began a research code-named EUREKA project EU147,
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).
 1988: Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) was established
as a sub committee of the International Standards
Organization.
 1989: Fraunhofer received a German patent for Mp3.
 1992: Fraunhofer’s and Dieter Seltzers‘ audio coding
algorithm was integrated into MPEG-1.
 1993: MPEG-1 standard published.
 1994: MPEG-2 developed and published.
 1996: USA patent issued for Mp3.
HISTORY AND TIMELINE
 1998: Fraunhofer started to enforce their patent rights. All
developers of Mp3 encoders and decoders now have to pay
a license fees to Fraunhofer.
 1999: A record company “SubPop” is the first to distribute
music tracks in the Mp3 format.
 1999: Portable Mp3 players appears.
BASIC PARTS OF AN MP3
PLAYER
 Data Port: Allows MP3 player to connect with the computer.
 Memory: It is the storage capacity of the MP3 player. The bigger the
memory, the more songs it can store. It is measured in bytes.
 Microprocessor: It is the main component of the mp3 player. When
we want to use the controls to choose a song, it sends directions to
the DSP telling it what to do.
 Digital signal processor (DSP): It performs the mathematical
calculations necessary to decode the digitized music.
 Display: It is the screen of the MP3 player.
 Playback Controls: To change, pause, forward, rewind, or play songs.
To increase or decrease volume.
 Audio Port: To connect earphones/headphones.
 Amplifier: To make the speakers to play louder and better sound.
 Power Supply: To charge the MP3 when it runs out of battery.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

WORKING: It has an input (probably a USB docking

lead that hooks it up to your computer), a memory
(either a small hard drive or a flash memory that can
store MP3 files), a processor (something that can
read the MP3 files and turn them back into music),
and an output (a socket where you plug in your
headphones). Most MP3 players have another output
also: a little LCD display that tells you what's playing.
TYPES OF MP3 PLAYERS
There are 5 basic types of MP3 players:

 Flash memory MP3 players

 Hard drive and mini-hard drive MP3 players
 MP3 CD players and mini disc MP3 players
 Micro hard drive based MP3 players
 The hybrid MP3 players
