POSITIVE AND

NEGATIVE FILIPINO
VALUES
Positive
Family oriented
◦Filipinos are known for having strong and
close family ties. They place high regard
and put importance on their family before
anything else. They work all day and do all
they can to feed and provide for
their family. In the Philippines,
they value their family so much that they
keep them intact through the years.
Joy and humor
◦Joy and Humor : Filipinos have a cheerful
and fun-loving approach to life and its up
and down, pleasant disposition, a sense
of humor and propensity
for happiness that contribute not only to
the Filipino charm but also to
the Filipino Spirit. We laugh at those we
love and hate.
Hard work and
industriousness
◦Filipinos are very determined and
persevering in accomplishing whatever
they set their minds to. Even with little
support, technological weaknesses and
the country's seasonal typhoons,
the Filipino farmer still strives to earn their
daily meal.
Hospitality
◦This is the most common terminology that
describes how Filipinos welcome
foreigners or tourists who visit the country.
For Filipinos, it is a pleasure and the
country's honor to accept foreigners as
visitors and build genuine relationships
and friendship with them.
Unity or “Bayanihan”
◦Bayanihan is a core essence of the Filipino
culture. It is helping out one's neighbor as
a community, and doing a task together,
thus lessening the workload and making
the job easier. It is also called the
'community spirit'. It is best exhibited when
people wish to move locations in the rural
area.
Negative
Crab mentality
◦Crab mentality is a widely used term in
the Philippines given to Filipinos who
always try to pull down other Filipinos who
are succeeding in life and getting ahead of
them. This trait is not unusual to us, as it's
actually one of the common bad habits of
many Filipinos. People with crab
mentality are everywhere.
Mañana habit
◦Manana habit is one of the most negative
traits of some people. It means mamaya
na in Filipino or to do a certain thing in a
later time. It is a procrastinate way of
doing a things or simple means finding a
way to delay a work to be done.
Filipino time
◦Instead of being something to be proud
of, ‘Filipino time’  brings a negative
impression to our people. The Filipino time
is usually associated with tardiness. When
the invitation says the program will start at
7pm, it is expected to begin at 9pm. When
the date is set at 3pm, the partner will
arrive at 5 o’ clock
Gossiping
◦ Filipinos are fond of talking about others’ business.
It is not true that only women are into gossiping.
Even men can also be nosy on other people’s lives.
Sadly, this does not bring any good to the subjects.
Secrets are brought out; failures and flaws are
emphasized; and relationships are destroyed.
Worse, as gossips are passed around, they tend to
be twisted until the final story becomes too far from
the original—thus, causing more damage.
