CAMPING

OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY


HOPE 4 – TEACHING GUIDE
Essential Topic: Outdoor Recreational Activity
Specific Topic: Camping

Content Standard
The learner demonstrates understanding of recreation in
optimizing one’s health as a habit; as requisite for PA
performance and as a career opportunity.
Culminating Performance Standard
Leads recreational activities with proficiency and confidence
resulting in independent pursuit and in influencing others
positively.

Learning Competencies

LC1 Discuss the nature of different recreational activities.


LC11 Identifies school and community resources incase of an
injury or emergency.
LC14 Recognizes the value of optimizing one’s health through
participation in physical activity assessments.
 
Specific Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. Make an emergency shelter safe and efficient.
2. Identify important things to bring when having an outdoor
activity (camping)
3. Appreciate the skills in making an emergency shelter.
 
Time Allotment: 1 hr. (1 meeting) HEALTH OPTIMIZING
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2 (H.O.P.E 2) is given 60 minutes per week.
INTRODUCTION
Opening Speech: 5mins
The importance of being prepared ones engaged in an outdoor
activity, by being self-sufficient in bringing necessary equipment
needed to answer basic needs, such as food and shelter.
Process Question/s:
1. What comes into your mind when you hear the word “camping”?
2. Who has experienced camping? When was this? Where did you
camp? Please share your experience during that camping. How was
the set –up? What difficulties have you met during the experience?
3. If given a chance to have another camping, are you going to apply
the same set- up that you have from your previous experience?
MOTIVATION
 Divide the class into five (5) groups.

Activity 1: Let’s Go for a Camp!


Suppose you are going to a camping tomorrow and you need to pack a
backpack, what will you bring? The group has 5 minutes to list all the things
they need to bring. Intentionally omit other details. Have a reporter for each
group to quickly read out what they have listed. Explain that the list will be
set aside for the meantime, but they will get back to it, when they have
tackled important points in camping.

Possible questions from students: “how long are we camping?” or “where


are we camping?” throw the questions back to the class. The point is this will
be a way of assessing how they will plan for camping and see the things they
consider important in camping.
MOTIVATION
Processing Questions: Ask the students to go back to
the list that they did earlier and ask the following:
1. Did you miss any detail that you need before packing?
2. Go back to your list and cross out the things which you feel
are not essential to bring, then add essential things that you
need to bring in camping. They may come up with a new list
of things they will bring for camping.
INSTRUCTION
The class now have an idea on what are the necessary things to bring during an
outdoor activity. The next thing to do now is to be resourceful on how to make a
shelter. (This will depend on the availability of resources in your campus or you can
give instruction to the class to either bring materials needed on the next meeting).

The class now is given a task to make an emergency shelter. They will be using any
available materials/resources inside the campus without giving/ making any
damage in the school property, they are not allowed to make use of the material
and while doing the task, the class/group must not disturbed other classes.

Emphasize to the class that having knowledge in making emergency shelter is very
important not only on having an outdoor activity but on an unpredictable
emergency situation that we need to evacuate from our homes for our own safety.
INSTRUCTION
Activity 2: Scavenging (5mins to 10mins)

Instruction: Each group will proceed to the stock room area, campus ground and
junk/debris area to get materials for their shelter making. The following materials
to be consider are:

1. Debris: Wood/ lumber/plywood


2. Scratch paper/newspaper/disposed tarp
3. Chairs/table
PRACTICE
Building of the emergency shelter for 25 mins.
Activity 2: Building My Emergency Shelter
With the same group, they will be given 5 minutes to
make an emergency shelter.
the group will use any available resources in the
surroundings.
ENRICHMENT
Throw valuing questions, leading to the importance of
knowing how to build an emergency shelter, highlighting
the essence of survival which now lead to fire building
activity, to food preparation.
EVALUATION 10mins to 15mins

While the group is doing their activity, the teacher will be


visiting each group and assess their initial work with the
following guide question:
 How did you come- up with this set-up?
 What materials did you use?
 Are you comfortable with this type of set- up? Do you
think this shelter is safe for you?

Discuss and present their output base on the given rubric
