PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC

CONTROLLER

What does ‘PLC’ mean?
A PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers)  is an industrial computer used
to monitor inputs, and depending upon their state make decisions based on
its program or logic, to control (turn on/off) its outputs to automate a
machine or a process.
Advantages of PLC control

 Rugged and designed to withstand vibrations, temperature, humidity, and

noise.

 Have interfacing for inputs and outputs already inside the controller.

 Easily programmed and have an easily understood programming language.

Hardware Components
of a PLC System

 Power supply unit

 Processor unit (CPU)

 Input/Output
Power Supply Module

 Most PLC controllers work either at

24 VDC or 220 VAC. Some PLC
controllers have electrical supply as
a separate module, while small and
medium series already contain the
supply module.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)

 CPU – Microprocessor based, may allow

arithmetic operations, logic operators,
block memory moves, computer interface,
local area network, functions, etc.
CPU makes a great number of check-ups
of the PLC controller itself so eventual
errors would be discovered early.
I/O Sections

 Inputs monitor field devices, such as

switches and sensors.

 Outputs control other devices, such as

motors, pumps, solenoid valves, and lights.
PLC Communication Networks
In industry most commonly using PLC communication networks are:

 Multi Point Interface (MPI)

 Profibus

 Industrial Ethernet
Multi Point Interface (MPI)

 MPI (Multi Point Interface) is suitable for small size networks.

 It can only be used in conjunction with the SIMATIC S7.

 The MPI uses the MPI interface of the PLCs central processor card for the
communication.

 This interface has been designed as a programming interface and quickly

reaches its performance limits with increasing communication demands.
Profibus

 The PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is used to transfer small to medium

sized data amounts between few communication partners.

 With the DP (Decentralized Periphery) protocol, PROFIBUS is used for

the communication to intelligent field devices.

 This type of communication is characterized by quick, cyclic data

transfers.
Industrial Ethernet

 The Industrial Ethernet is used to transfer large amounts of data over long
distances between a large number of stations.

 The Industrial Ethernet is the most powerful network available for the
industrial communication.

It can be configured and expanded easily without great effort.
Hardware Configuration

 The range of PLC manufacturing vendors is vast.

 But Siemens & Allen Bradley (AB) PLCs are most famous PLCs using
worldwide.

 Here, we are discussing the siemens PLC hardware configuration

 Software use for hardware configuration and programming of siemens PLC

is SIMATIC MANAGER (STEP 7)
Hardware Configuration

 STEP 7 standard Package provides a series of applications (tools) within

the software.
Hardware Configuration
 The term "configuring" refers to the arranging of racks, modules,
distributed I/O (DP) racks, and interface sub modules.
Hardware Configuration

 In the configuration table, STEP 7 automatically assigns an address to each

module.

 You can change the addresses of the modules.

 You can modify it as necessary, and download it to you PLC.

 When the PLC starts up, the CPU compares the preset configuration
created in STEP 7 with the actual configuration of the plant. Any errors are
therefore recognized immediately and reported.
