THE KING AND THE SHIRT
BY: LEO TOLSTOY

A king once fell ill. “I will give half my kingdom to the man who can cure me,” he said.
All his wise men gathered together to decide how the king could be cured, but no one knew. Only
one of the wise men said what he thought would cure the king.
“ If you can find a happy man, take his shirt, out it on the king-------and the king will be
cured.”
The king sent his messengers to search for a happy man. They traveled far and wide
throughout his whole kingdom, but they could not find a happy man. There was no one who was
completely satisfied.
If a man was rich, he was ailing. If he was healthy, he was poor. If he was
rich and healthy, he had a bad wife. If he had children, they were bad.
Everyone had something to complain of.
Finally, late one night, the king’s son was passing by a poor little hut
and he heard someone say, “ Now, God be praised, I have finished my
work, I have eaten my fill, and I can lie down and sleep! What more
could I want?”
The king’s son rejoiced and gave orders that the man’s shirt be taken
and carried to the king, and that man be given as much money as he
wanted.
The messengers went in to take off the man’s shirt, but the happy
man was so poor that he had no shirt.

The Rabbit and the Turtle
Adapted
It was one Saturday morning in a meadow. The turtle had taken a swim in the
nearby river. He had looked into the warm riverbank and covered with soil the
hole where his wife had laid eggs. He decided to go for a little walk in the
meadow.
He had not gone very far when he met the rabbit. He gave him a pleasant
greeting. But the rabbit, who was very proud and arrogant in his manner, did not
return the turtle’s greeting. He asked, “What are you doing out so early in the
morning?”
“I’m out walking!”
“Walking? Why are you always walking? Why don’t you run for a change? Oh! I
see. Your legs are never made for running.”
The remark annoyed the turtle to no end. He was touchy on the subject of his legs
and slowness to move.
“I suppose you think your legs are better than mine?” answered the turtle.
“I do!” answered the rabbit.
As both had the dialogue, they ended up running against each other for a golden
piece. The rabbit wanted to start right away, but the turtle said that they will have
it after an hour since he has not taken his breakfast and might faint.
The turtle said to himself, “The rabbit thinks well of his long legs. But I’ll get the
better of him all the same. For all his proud ways, he is not clever.”
As soon as he got home, the turtle called his wife.
“Quick! Go and get ready. You must come out with me to the field.”
Don’t be so quick with your words. That’s my affair. You must not meddle with what you don’t
understand. Look sharp. Put on some of my new things and come along.”
The turtle explained to his wife what she would do.
The rabbit was waiting for the turtle in the meadow.
“Shall we start?” asked the rabbit.
“Right!” answered the turtle.
So each took his place. At the count of three, they went away like the wind. But the turtle took
only three pieces. He ducked down and went back where he started. The moment the rabbit
came rushing to the end, the turtle’s wife called out.
Here I am already!”
The rabbit was taken aback. The turtle was really there calling out to him.
“There’s something wrong here!”
“We must run again back to the starting point.”
And away he flew like the wind. The turtle’s wife never moved. When the
rabbit was nearing the finish line, the turtle called out.
“Here I am already!”
Feeling very upset, the rabbit called out.
‘“We must run again!”
“Right as what you like.”
The rabbit went running backward and forward. And always the turtle got the better
of him. At last, he dropped down and paid the turtle the golden piece.
Events are related to each other by cause and
effect. Cause is what make things happen and effect is the
result of what happened.
