Ice Sheets

By Hashim, Ayra and Omar

How has the climate changed over the past 20 years?

The climate has not changed in a good way as the

icebergs have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes are
breaking earlier than usual. The ice sheets are melting
which is causing sea levels to rise. If all the ice sheets in
the world were to melt, the sea level would rise by 70
meters (230 feet).

Before After
What are Ice sheets And what does its information tell us?

Ice sheets are layers of ice. For a long period of time they
cover up an extensive part of land. They cover more than
50,000 square metres. There are two ice sheets in the world,
Antarctica and Greenland. Ice sheets are larger than both ice
shelves and alpine glaciers.

How the mass of ice sheets changed is recorded by NASA’S

GRACE satellites for both Greenland and Antarctica. The ice
sheets seem to be melting, meaning that our world is heating
up. This is a sign of climate change.
The Graph Evidence and what does it mean?
A Recent Reversal Discovered in the
Response of Greenland's Ice Caps to Climate
Change. Over the past 2,000 years, these ice
caps endured periods of warming during
which they grew larger rather than shrinking.
“Currently, we know Greenland's ice caps
are melting due to warming, further
contributing to sea level rise.
Which years are covered by each graph?

The Ice Sheets in Greenland had been losing mass since 2002.

GRACE(The satellite in Greenland) had recorded the mass loss. GRACE had kept track
on the mass loss. In June 2018 the the mass loss continued. I has been decreasing.

This is terrible for the animals in \

Greenland and for the people that

Are living there.

This is the graph of mass loss in the years.
Impact

When the ice sheets get smaller:

● Coastal cities and small islands will be endangered from
rising seas.
● They will receive storm surges
● Receive floods

If they melt completely, sea level will rise to 20 feet.
