Measures of Dispersion or Variability

Measures of Dispersion or Variability describes the

spread or the scatterings of the values around the mean
1. The range is the distance between the maximum value
and the minimum value.
2. The variance is the average squared difference of
each observation from the mean.
3. The standard deviation is the positive square root of
the variance.
• Example:

• Find the range in the following set of data:

• 15, 28, 11, 15, 7, 20, 16, 13, 23, 18, 20, 14
R= H–L
= 28 – 7
R = 21
• B. Grouped Data

The range for the grouped data is the difference between the
highest class upper boundary and the lowest lower class boundary:
R = Ubh – Lbl
• where:
Ubh = highest class boundary
Lbl = lowest class boundary

• Example:
Find the range of the following grouped data:

Class interval F X Cf<
80– 84 8 82 58
75 – 79 12 77 50
70– 74 16 72 38
65– 69 12 67 22
60– 64 10 62 10
N =58
• Measures of Variability
The information given by various measures of central
tendency is too limited. They only describe the cluster
around a central point or location of a set of values.
Let us consider the three sets of data below:
What is the mean in each of the set of data below
Set A: 54, 55, 56, 57, and 58
Set B: 53, 55, 56, 57, and 59
Set C: 50, 52, 56, 59 and 63
Variance , Standard Deviation,

• S= Σ( x – Ⴟ )² Σ( x – Ⴟ )²
n–1 S= n
• Sample is used Population is used

S2 = Σ( x – Ⴟ )² S = n

• Example:
Consider the following data
Find the standard deviation and the variance of
the grades of Physical Therapy students in
Health Economics long test:
75, 77, 79, 80, 83, 81, 84, 78, 88, 86
• Solution:
Arrange first the data in order, then find the
mean.

Grades (x) x-Ⴟ (x – Ⴟ)2
88 6.9 47.61
86 4.9 24.01
84 2.9 8.41
83 1.9 3.61
81 -0.1 0.01
80 -1.1 1.21
79 -2.1 4.41
78 -3.1 9.61
77 -4.1 16.81
75 -6.1 37.21
Σ = 811 Σ (x - x )² = 152.9
Ⴟ = 81.1
• Using the formula:

• Σ ( x – Ⴟ )²
• SD = n

• = 152. 9

• 10

• = 15.29
• SD = 3.91 or 4
• Solving for Variance,Variance
• (SD)² = (3. 91)² = 15.29
• Using the formula:

• Σ ( x – Ⴟ)²
• SD = n-1

• = 152. 9

• 9

• = 16.98
• SD = 4.12 or 4
• Solving for Variance,Variance
• (SD)² = (4.12)² = 16.98
B. Grouped Data

Example:
  Given the data below solve for (a) the standard deviation and, (b) variance.
Wages Number of X fX x–Ⴟ (x – Ⴟ)2 f(x – Ⴟ)2

35 – 31 11 33 363 -5.57 31.02 341.22

40 – 36 16 38 608 -0.57 0.32 5.12

45 – 41 11 43 473 4.43 19.62 215.82

50 – 46 9 48 432 9.43 88.92 800.28

N = 53 2044 Σf(x – x)2 =

2032.76
Ⴟ = 38.57

• Σ [f ( x – Ⴟ )² ]

• SD = n

• 2032.76
• SD = 53

• = 38.35
• SD = 6.19
• 2
