A GLIMPSE

HISTORY
ADNU’S
HISTORY
• 1940 – the Ateneo de Naga was founded as a Jesuit school for boys, with Fr. Francis
D. Burns, S.J., as Rector.
• December 1941 – A group of Jesuits moved into their new residence on campus and
prepared to move classes after Christmas. But on December 8, the Pacific War began.
• June 1, 1947 – the Ateneo de Naga was granted by the Department of Education full
recognition as a standard four-year high school.
• June 5, 1947 – College was opened with 87 male students.
• October 26, 1953 – Ateneo College became coeducational with the admission of five
women.

During the Japanese colonization, the Japanese army had turned the Ateneo as a
torture chamber.
Father Burns was the first director after the Japanese colonizer.
The Bishop Santos Hall was built in 1961 for Ateneo’s founder and first Bishop.

The Servant of God, Fr. Pedro Arrupe SJ
Background:
• The 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus
• Jesuits and non jesuits witnesses the exceptional qualities oh him such as:
- His desire to fulfill in everything, the will of God the Father
- His rootedness in Jesus Christ
- His trust in the Holy Spirit as the guide of the church
- His unfailing loyalty to the Holy Father, the “Vicar of Christ on the Earth”
- His missionary disposition
- Showed himself to be an extraordinary, passionate “man of God and man of
the Church”
CONTRIBUTION:
- Provided the means for the Society, the Church and
society at large to be nourished by the richness of the
Ignatian tradition.
- Led the Society as a requirement o the faith – to struggle
against all injustice and unbelief.
- He invited the students to be “men and women for others”

FR. RAUL BONOAN, SJ
Background:

• First Jesuit Educator


• 1st University President

Contribution:
- Under his leadership in the year 90s, provided infrastructure development such
as the most prominent construction of new buildings namely James O’ Brien
Library, the most modern library in the Region.
- He paved the way for the college to retain the high school and led Ateneo De
Naga to become one of the Top 18 universities and colleges in the Philippines.
FR. PRIMITIVE VIRAY, SJ
Background:
• 3rd University President

Contribution:
- Under his leadership, Ateneo de Naga maintained its Centers of
Excellence and Development status thus, new offices were
established.
- In the year 2011, it was the year when the Fr. Raul Bonoan Building
was constructed to house the university cafeteria, new classrooms and
other offices.
